Jonathan Bergknoff's personal blog at jonathan.bergknoff.com covers programming and web. Since 2014, 8 different Hacker News readers have linked it 24 times, most often “Run More Stuff in Docker”. The last post was in 2024, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (2) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Posts on Docker practice, covering building smaller container images and running development tools inside containers. One commenter calls the containerised dev-tools post a source of good tips.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
On the contrary: Docker is currently the best way, bar none, of distributing tools like this one to developers. Kudos to the Super Linter developers for doing this right. I wrote an article a while ago arguing this point: https://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/run-more-stuff-in-doc...

HN discussionGreat post. It's always good to see more examples of people putting these tools to work. With that said, I consider getting the AMI id dynamically to be an anti-pattern which undermines the principles of infrastructure-as-code. Specifically, it introduces an implicit build variable "time of `terraform apply`", which is not tracked in version control. Happily, because of Terraform's design, this sort of thing mostly…

HN discussion> The minimal Ubuntu 12.02 image is 627MB. Add your own application layer, and your container will most likely weight more than 1GB. I've read that using Debian (or if possible Busybox) helps in this area. See http://container-solutions.com/2014/11/6-dockerfile-tips-off... and http://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/building-good-docker-i... for tips. > Every time your application is updated, check the Gemfile md5 and…

HN discussionWell said. I see a lot of value in containers as a means of distributing software, but I agree that it's heavier and hackier than it feels like it ought to be. I recently wrote about this here: https://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/run-more-stuff-in-doc...

HN discussionThis isn't exactly "the difference", but some advantages of distributing software in Docker images include cross-platform support and a uniform sandboxing interface. I wrote more about this here: https://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/run-more-stuff-in-doc...

HN discussionWe do the same thing but I wouldn’t call it a nightmare /hassle. It’s exactly one helper script to start up the container with the right volumes and a few aliases to make commands (ansible / ansible-playbook / etc) work seamlessly. Some good tips here: https://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/run-more-stuff-in-doc...

HN discussionI'm a big fan of using containers to distribute and run tools. It's an underappreciated use case. I wrote about its benefits (and drawbacks) a few months ago: https://jonathan.bergknoff.com/journal/run-more-stuff-in-doc... . Subuser looks interesting, nice work! I love to see progress in this space.

HN discussionHi, I'm the author. Thanks for taking a look. This is basically a tool to help manage a "Dockerfile" repo (along the lines of https://github.com/jessfraz/dockerfiles ), where you build any tools you want into images that you control. This can be really useful for personal use or within a company. Why build tools into Docker images? Love it or hate it, there are many senses in which Docker is currently the best mediu…
