What Hacker News says?
Ironically Stack Overflow is one of the best-functioning sites I know of. Community issues, sure, but the pages load really quickly and the UI highlights exactly what it should. But then there are some big sites which truly suck: massive load time and basic UI issues. Like outdated government/university sites, job application sites, Kroger’s online store ( https://joshstrange.com/2024/02/11/krogers-digital-struggle/…

HN discussionNote that the usual method for doing so (a CNAME on the bare domain) prevents you from adding other resource records (such as MX) on the domain. 1. http://joshstrange.com/why-its-a-bad-idea-to-put-a-cname-rec...

HN discussionI'm so glad that some people are able to use it in this way and I'm jealous. I found the code too blurry [0] and I disliked being limited to 1 blurry screen with 3 clear monitors available to me. I ended up returning mine but I can't wait till I can work inside one of those without feeling limited. It's easy to imagine a future where the AVP beats my monitors and I can't wait. HN discussionYou're very welcome! Since you are a new mac user you might also be interested in the list of Mac Apps I use [0]. Also if you don't use a magic mouse/apple mouse scroll can be jerky and annoying. For my gaming mouse I use Smooze [1] to help smooth out scrolling. HN discussionI never knew how easy it was to setup role assuming for AWS/GHA. It’s much easier than managing the access/secret. I wrote a little about it in this blog post: https://joshstrange.com/2024/04/26/nightly-postgres-backups-...

HN discussionI agree and it can be very frustrating. You put a lot of effort into something and get almost no feedback/traffic (I also don’t write for money or make money from my blog, but it’s nice to see people read it) and then you can write a pithy comment or post that doesn’t dig into the nuance and it will blow up. Some of my highest upvoted HN comments are 1-2 sentences but when I’ve responded or posted something well tho…

HN discussionI wrote a whole blog post [0] about this that just completely slipped my mind. I think my comment does a good job of getting the same points across but I can’t believe I spent 20-some minutes regurgitating this information haha. HN discussionYep, pretty much the same conclusions I came to [0] in my blog posts on the AVP. It’s essentially an iPad on your face (in both weight and capability). I was happy to pay its cost if it could replace my external monitors but it’s far from being able to do that. The pass through quality could be forgiven (it’s cutting edge but still not perfect) if the Mac Virtual Display was as sharp as visionOS apps but it’s not. A…

HN discussionNope, I returned it. I wrote about it across multiple blog posts [0] but the TL;DR is that it was too limiting. It was strapping an iPad to your face and an iPad is an incredibly limiting device IMHO, one that is only good for content consumption (at least for the hobbies/interests I have). I was excited for Mac Virtual Display but it was too blurry (I tried with contacts in and with the lenses from Apple). Even in…

HN discussionIt’s something to do with how your screen is AirPlay’d to the AVP. I too thought it would be 4K but I think all that was said is something like “4K per eye” but that doesn’t mean 4K for monitors. Text in AVP apps is crisp but Mac Virtual Display is not. I put an image at the top of this post https://joshstrange.com/2024/02/10/the-use-case-for-mac-virt... and the previous post has some video looking at code to give y…

HN discussionI have one and I will be returning it. I’ve written about it here: https://joshstrange.com It’s too blurry (Mac Virtual Display), and too limiting compared to external monitors. Maybe it’s better than just the laptop screen but I’m not sold on even that. Either way it can’t come close to replacing my monitors, maybe v2 or v3 will and I’ll reevaluate then, for now, it’s going back.
