Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked in HN threads on Haskell, including one post on what 'type safety' means in Haskell. Other comments discuss Haskell fusion and learning Haskell, without judging the posts themselves.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

I'm taking time these days learning how to do useless things, to do dumb things, to move without purpose. It feels weird and dangerous. When I try, I am little bit afraid. But I like that. In the pas…

What Hacker News says?

  1. >I believe one of the arguments was also that these couldn't be written in statically typed languages. Although, I do not know if this turned out to be true. It's not true, they were just abstrusely defined and there's some weirdness around the implicit effects that you can choose to either ignore or incorporate into the equivalent. Fusion is one of the main things Haskell is known for and an API that gets close eno…

  3. First, to be clear, I really liked this presentation. The criticism below is both technical and small---all in all I greatly enjoy Rich Hickey's work and generally admire his ability to talk compellingly about complex technical topics. That said. I somewhat disliked Hickey's presentation of typing transducers here. I feel as though he builds a number of strawmen toward typing and then tries to knock them down and su…

  5. Safety as you're using is not the concept that Haskeller's refer to when they talk about the language. "Type safety" is a very precise term that refers to several proofs about the semantics of the language. See: http://jspha.com/posts/all_you_wanted_to_know_about_types_bu...

  7. Type safety also trivially holds in any dynamically typed language. You just call all values the same type---suddenly "preservation" and "progress" hold without actually meaning anything. That's why its "type safety of a system which captures interesting invariants" which is actually interesting. http://jspha.com/posts/six_points_about_type_safety/

  10. If you can find a way to get a hold of it, Saunders MacLane's Mathematics: Form and Function is a tremendous book for understanding how math arises from the world and reflects it. What's written here is a lot more specific than that, of course, but if this illustration interests you then it might be a good book to try digging into a little bit. On the other hand, while I am always cognizant and amazed by the POV of…

  12. I've been learning Haskell for the last year and a half, though I've been working with functionally inspired languages for 8 years. Haskell is wonderful, easily the most fun I've had learning a language in 20 years. I'd advise not getting distracted by monads and other glamorous parts of the language. Monads are pretty abstract, and they won't likely make much sense until you've written enough Haskell to feel the pa…
