Too few sampled comments (2) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

HN commenters link a post on machine learning with PyTorch and scikit-learn, one citing it as the write-up of a project another user carried out. Comments do not judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I took the summer off to learn enough ML to transition from a career in software engineering & product / leadership type roles to ML. I suggest for a first round learning practical tools and techniques so you can start applying supervised learning techniques right away while also starting to build a more solid foundation in probability & statistics for future deeper understanding of the field. I've written about my…

  3. Make ability to learn on the job a high priority. Save your money and take time off. I wrote about my experience taking time off for a 'learning sabbatical' here: http://karlrosaen.com/learning-sabbatical/ and now have a job where I make quite a bit less than my last job but have a lot of freedom to learn on the job (e.g spend several hours a week working through material that will make me more valuable on the job,…

  5. Some on this thread have recommended Norvig's PAIP, but that's kind of an old school AI book in that it focuses on heuristic search and logic (implementing prolog in lisp at one point, very impressive stuff actually); but is lacking any coverage of statistical machine learning, which is the approach that underlies most of the cool stuff these days. It's still a great book, but I'd instead recommend a path that focus…

  7. I'm about a year into a transition from traditional software dev / engineering leadership to ML / robotics engineering, starting with 6 months off of personal study and now continuing study while on the job as a research engineer. I wrote about my experience and give advice on how to approach learning ML here: http://karlrosaen.com/ml/

  11. Thanks for putting this together. I recommend you check out https://sebastianraschka.com/ the author of Python Machine Learning. He's great at explaining things, wrote the bets intro to ML book IMHO and is a good Twitter follow. I also humbly submit my own guide, from the perspective of how to approach studying it amidst all the resources available: http://karlrosaen.com/ml/

  16. I like this post, but perhaps it'd be more accurate to say that expertise is a necessary but not sufficient condition to teach a subject? I do find that the very best teachers have mastery of the material. On a related note, when I posted this notebook about the sigmoid function to HN http://karlrosaen.com/ml/notebooks/logistic-regression-why-s... it was upvoted to the front page (presumably by non-experts like me)…

  17. Depends on what you are most hungry for. For me this past summer it was to have time off to study without interruption, I absolutely loved it. Also have a family, enjoyed having extra time and flexibility. Took a few vacations. http://karlrosaen.com/learning-sabbatical/

  18. I was in a strikingly similar position as you at the beginning of this year. In December 2015, I setup a plan to quit my job and take some time to self-learn Artificial Intelligence, when I was accepted into a master's program in Barcelona (UPC's* - assuming it's the same as the one you're considering). This blogpost outlines what my plan and concerns were about the self-taught route: http://cole-maclean.github.io/b…
