Why HN links it

HN readers link this personal blog for its writing about R and simplifying things, and for base R plotting. One commenter points to it as the place to read about base R plot() as an alternative to ggplot2.

  5. I work with R and not python, so some things might not apply, but this: > [...] it fixes the problem at the time, then it gets thrown away with the notebook only to be written again soon. Is one of the reasons I stopped using notebooks. One solution to your problem might be to create a simple executable script that, when called on the file of your dataset in a shell, would produce the visualisation you need. If it's…

  7. Here is one additional bookmark solution [1]: export CDPATH=.:~/.marks/ function mark { ln -sr "$(pwd)" ~/.marks/"$1" } mark @name # create a bookmark cd @name # jump to bookmark cd @<tab> # list bookmarks cd @n<tab> # auto-complete cd @name/<tab> # can access sub-directories within bookmarks Works best when bookmarks are prefixed by "@" or other special symbol. Additional advantage is that you can use the same func…

  9. I don't want to say that the Tidyverse is inferior, because it's not and it works for a lot of people. Hadley will also know much more about R and always be a better programmer than me. However, there are other tools which predate Tidyverse, which I think so a stellar job at their core competency. ggplot2 is great, but it was also around long before the Tidyverse concept. But at the same time base R plot() can also…

  13. I'm really pleased to see you're using Pander[1] in your tool chain. I think this is one of the most useful literate programming tools in the R ecosystem. Although, having read Part 6 (briefly), it looks like you might only be using it for tables and plots. I think Pander's literate programming functionality, in conjunction with Brew, is worth further exploration[2]. Also, if you're using R-base plots, there's an ex…

  15. Thank you for sharing. Even thou I have a lot fewer projects and majority of my work happens on the projects of clients - I managed to take away some useful ideas and tips. Specifically using "issue" as a place where everything gets tied together and combining all aspects of a feature into a single main-branch commit is something I will try to do more from now on. Since your workflow is so GitHub centered, one place…

  17. Base R plot() can also be pretty powerful[1] and look great.[2] As an alternative to ggplot2 I would also propose that Vega Lite[3] could be a contender, with an excellent cross language ecosystem. 21. Bad: - Inability to set up your /home/ (which is /Users/ on a mac) the way you like it. There are default folders for Documents, Pictures, Music, etc and they cannot be deleted. If you delete them they are recreated either immediately or on reboot. My hack-of-a-solution was to alias ls to hide them [1]. - Just like with folders, there are also applications that you cannot delete. One such application is Chess - a pr…

  23. I like minimal things that work well without adding complexity. This is more in the "hack" category, but here is a solution for bookmarking directories[1] that I am quite fond of: export CDPATH=.:~/.marks/ function mark { ln -sr "$(pwd)" ~/.marks/"$1" } Then: mark @name # add bookmark called @name for the current directory cd @name # jump to the bookmarked location cd @<tab> # list all available bookmarks It can lis…

  25. Interesting, I am using a similar convention, but for GitHub issue labels, not commit messages [1]. Then, the commit messages often just refer to the issue number as a reference. [1]: http://karolis.koncevicius.lt/posts/improving_github_issue_l...
