What Hacker News says?

  1. Hah still remember the old “solving the internet with hate” idea from Zed Shaw in the glory days of Ruby on Rails. https://weblog.masukomi.org/2018/03/25/zed-shaws-utu-saving-... I do believe we will end there eventually, with the emerging tech like Brazil’s and India’s payment architectures it should be a possibility in the coming decades

  3. This reminds me of Zed Shaw's Utu protocol from back in the day: https://weblog.masukomi.org/2018/03/25/zed-shaws-utu-saving-... I am not a crypto guy, but my understanding is that users can downvote each other, and the more downvotes a user gets the harder the proof-of-work problem they had to solve before they post. If you received enough hate, your CPU would spike for a couple of minutes each time you tried to po…

  5. I wrote a blog post[1] breaking down tools to record terminal sessions just a couple weeks ago. I wasn't aware of this particular one but it looks like it's going to have issues with recording anything that requires user input. My post describes how to make high quality recordings of terminal sessions that can be replayed in the terminal, or shared on the web. I'm defining high quality as recordings with zero typos,…

  7. I wrote a rebuttal to this: https://weblog.masukomi.org/2022/11/14/a-rebuttal-to-scaling... The short short version is that it scales just fine if you use it the way its intended. The protocol provably scales just fine (contrary to his claim), the real problem with scaling is that it violates the core idea that Fediverse server apps (all of them) are written with the idea of serving a community, not hosting the next…

  9. Hmm the now old post by Zed Shaw from the dawn of ruby on rails era - “saving the internet with hate” comes to mind. https://weblog.masukomi.org/2018/03/25/zed-shaws-utu-saving-... Basically baking in a reputation system into network protocols, to deter bad actors… not sure how viable a solution it is, just fun to think how far back people were thinking about solutions to these problems.

  11. This is so very wrong.... > tabs are bad, because if you let people choose their own tab widths then it becomes impossible to align anything anymore. In what world is that true. If you indent your code with tabs, and I indent your code with tabs and I show my tabs as 4 chars wide and you show yours and 8 EVERYTHING IS STILL ALIGNED. It's just greater or lesser levels of indentation. You only have problems when you M…

  13. yes. these background check companies suck. I almost didn't get a job because the company doing the background check couldn't be bothered to get off their ass and deal with a company that went bust in the dot com crash. They just said i was lying rather than actually taking the time to do research and see that the company didn't exist anymore for a good reason. I documented my BS experience here http://weblog.masuko…

  19. Since they make a repo mirror every time they pull, why don't they have a backup? Do their developers never communicate with each other? (Why are they using github as their build repo?!) > Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that git makes hosting your own public repository absurdly complicated ( http://weblog.masukomi.org/2008/03/11/sharing-a-public-git-r... ) compared to other tools ( http://weblog.masuko…

  21. MacDown. Stay away from Mou. Very sketchy author. He did an Indiegogo campaign after essentially abandoning the project and failing to sell it and hasn't updated in 6 months after taking $25,000 from backers[0][1][2][3] He also raised the price of the product because "There're too many pre-orders. We decide to raise price to reduce the sale."[4] [0] https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mou-1-0-markdown-editor-o... [1]…
