Why HN links it

HN readers link Kellabyte's blog for writing on distributed systems and databases: network partitions and CAP, an alternative to Paxos, clarifying REST, and LevelDB design for mobile.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  5. Partitions are not rare. A partition simply means that one node is not available to another, which does not have to be caused by a network failure. For example, a stop the world GC is equivalent to a network failure - the node is unreacheable at this time. So is a deployment with downtime (e.g. a 10 second restart per-node). Also, while you can't access the partitioned area, you might have nodes outside that area. T…

  9. "In my experience, all distributed consensus algorithms are either: "1: Paxos, "2: Paxos with extra unnecessary cruft, or "3: broken. " — Mike Burrows (possibly) Edit: I think the reason this exists is best explained in this blog post ( http://kellabyte.com/2013/05/09/an-alternative-to-paxos-the-... ). It's not that this provides more than Paxos, the goal is to write something that's simpler and easier to implement.…
