  3. I have been using Digital Ocean as a sandbox for playing with Docker, and it has been great. I can spin up a server in less then 1 minute, install the Docker dependencies, and be up in running in no time. I do what I need to do, and then I spin it down if I don't need it anymore. I wrote down my notes on how to get Docker running on Digital Ocean, if anyone wants to play with it. There is even a promo code for a $10…

  7. TL;DR == They're awesome! Longer: I signed up a couple of weeks ago to try them out. A preface: My requirements: Django==1.4 PIL==1.1.7 distribute==0.6.24 django-crispy-forms==1.1.4 psycopg2==2.4.5 I also knew for my next project I'd need Redis support for sorl-thumbnails. FWIW, PIL requires some C libraries for image handling. I found this http://www.kencochrane.net/blog/2011/06/django-hosting-round... and sort of…

  11. This is cool stuff, I have also been trying to get LXC containers running on the RaspberryPi. I used their guide and it went pretty well. I want to create a downloadable image so that you can skip over all the begining steps, and get into the fun stuff quicker. Just haven't had the time yet. I'm now trying to get Docker running on the raspberryPi, if you want to help, checkout my notes here: http://kencochrane.net/b…

Ken Cochrane has a really good guide to PCI compliance from a developer's standpoint. The main point that it drives home, though, is that you really don't want to ever be in a position where you could be touching card-level data. You want to hand that off to Stripe, Braintree, Balanced, PayPal, someone else before it hits your server. http://kencochrane.net/blog/2012/01/developers-guide-to-pci-...

Yeah, DotCloud is all about hosting apps on their platform. ;) They have support for background processes, redis, postgres, and wsgi, so they were basically perfect for my use case. The best place to get started is DotCloud's own docs, as well as this blog post (specifically for django): http://kencochrane.net/blog/2011/04/deploying-my-django-appl... Oh and they let you use their SSL certificate for free, which is p…
