  1. On the same subject, I prefer the concurrently published "Image Analogies" paper ( http://www.mrl.nyu.edu/projects/image-analogies/ ) because their described technique, while slow, just makes so much sense.

  3. I loved Ken Perlin's java applets years ago. Sadly, the demise of Java as webapps means they now require jumping through a few hoops to get them running nowadays. http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/ Tangentially, there's always a bit of heartache when I use the text input in Steam's Big Picture mode, as I wish Perlin's innovative input modes saw wider usage (see the "pen input" section of the above link). Of course, I under…

  13. Ken Perlin has done some interesting work on the subject: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/experiments/demox/Planet.html It is a render of a randomly-seeded "Earth" that supports zooming. You can zoom in continuously to recursively expanding island formations. The formations are not random, in the sense that they are not decided on the fly. They are fixed based on the original seed and will stay the same if you come back…

  15. The 'improved noise' mentioned in the page is, I believe, more commonly known as 'simplex noise'[1], as it is mathematically based on manipulating n-dimensional simplicies. If you're interested in noise and using it well, his presentation 'flow noise'[2] is quite educational. 19. Check out this link from the venerable Ken Perlin: https://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/experiments/demox/Hyper.html There's a hard-to-get-running-due-to-age Java applet there which, when it used to run easily, was very powerful for getting me to understand 4D in an intuitive way. It has a variety of stereo viewing modes, ranging from eye-crossed 3D (and wall-eye), to red/blue glasses, and so forth. It also has an excellent…

If you want to see the same thing done 18 years ago without new-age machine learning, read https://www.mrl.nyu.edu/projects/image-analogies/index.html IMO the most elegant vision/graphics algorithm ever written. Specifically this is the "texture-by-numbers" application. Ex: https://www.mrl.nyu.edu/projects/image-analogies/potomac.htm... 30. Xerox PARC sued Palm over Graffiti for patent infringement in 1997 [1] [2], having filed a patent for Unistrokes in 1993 [3]. Their patent was ruled invalid due to prior art, Xerox appealed the ruling, and Palm payed Xerox $22.5 million [4]. Research [5] has shown Unistrokes to be somewhat faster than Graffiti. >Furthermore, the [Unistroke] alphabet's strokes are well distinguished in "sloppiness space", allowing fo…
