HN discussionIn my previous job I battled this a lot. While I really like slack in general, no one likes it when things fall through the cracks or important people miss out. It actually bothered me enough that I quit my job and made Kitemaker (YC W21) which automatically watches slack conversations for mentions of work items and links them together. This linkage lets people working on something that there are discussions going o…

HN discussionI'm a founder of a company making Jira/Trello competitor [0] and we actually just released a Discord integration this week (we've had a Slack one for ages) because we had a number of customers and potential customers ask for it. So a small N, but it does seem to be gaining in popularity inside companies, at least smaller ones. 0: https://kitemaker.co

HN discussion> And there is the on prem and cloud versions. And they are not feature matched. This is my daily nightmare. We’re building a competitor to Jira [0] so naturally we want to allow people to import their issues from Jira into our tool. Integrating to Jira cloud is a reasonably good experience. But Jira server? Total chaos. We needed to dig up an ancient OAuth1 implemention just to get users authenticated and it didn’t…

HN discussionFully agree on Jira. Disliked it enough to start a company to compete with it [0]. Also agree on AWS. Their UI is so terrible and confusing that it makes writing CloudFormation yaml files feel alright in comparison. Been using GCP lately and the UI is somewhat better though still confusing and weird at times. 0: https://kitemaker.co

HN discussionJust to toss another hat in the ring - people who are interested in a tool that has a lot of same performance/hotkey characteristics as Linear but takes a different approach to what a product management tool/issue tracker should be should take a look at Kitemaker (YC W21) [0]. We've also got great integrations to Github, Slack, Figma, etc. We've got a pretty generous free tier so you can try it out for quite a while…

HN discussionIn case someone's in the market for a fast, developer-first alternative to Asana, check out https://kitemaker.co - list views of issues (if you prefer that over the board) - can do everything without touching a mouse (if you're into that) - integrations to GitHub, Slack, etc. - reach editor with markdown shortcuts (similar to the Notion editor)

on “Asana S-1”Shipping is important. It's a nice feeling to get it out there. But to imagine that if you'd just shipped it then everyone would be using your app instead of someone else's is nonsense. You're in full control of shipping. Getting distribution for your software - getting it to really take off - is super super hard. Being an engineer, I think we tend to gloss over this part. I'm working on a product in a very crowded…

on “The saddest “Just Ship It” story”Definitely feel your pain. We did a full OT implementation for our startup [0] and it was a beast. We based it on Slate.js which has a nice concept of operations that maps nicely to OT, but it was still a lot of work to get it working well (and there are still rough edges we try to improve all of the time). We did base it on Postgres in the backend so really looking forward to what the Supabase team comes up with go…

on “Supabase – Realtime: Multiplayer Edition”Speaking of Jira alternatives, I recently discovered Kitemaker [1], which is really nice. The UI is clean and it's fast too (has keyboard shortcuts for everything, etc). [1] https://kitemaker.co/

on “Show HN: Tara – A free Jira alternative, now with Gitlab”I've got to applaud you for thinking about distribution first. Many tech folks turned entrepreneurs (myself included) think that if they build a great product, they'll get usage. Doesn't work that way. But I will also say that I suspect your strategy is possibly a little naive. I hope it's as easy as you've laid out, and I'm envious of the viral aspects of your proposed product. However, I suspect the "top of funnel…

on “How and when to acquire SaaS users”I a big believer in the fact that splitting tasks into little micro bits that we work on in isolation is really holding teams back. Sizing work so that it's big enough to be of some value delivered to your users is a great way to actually getting your team thinking about the big picture and the impact they're having and to encourage your team members to work together on delivering that value. You don't need to slice…

on “Little Tasks, Little Trust”I've had going through RefactoringUI on my todo list for a very long time. I'm working at a small startup [0] on a fairly complex product and design resources is always a challenge. Being able to make some of the simple decisions myself feels like it could be a super power. 0: https://kitemaker.co , super fast, highly collaborative issue tracker

on “UI design for software developers. Part 1, Colors”So I just tried pasting this into the editor for the issue tracker I work on [0]. When I traverse the URL from left to right with the keyboard cursor it goes as "normal" up to the the last / then jumps to the end, then traverses "backwards" then jumps back to the end. Is this right or do we have a bug? Mixing LTR and RTL is super confusing. Does recognize it as a link just fine though. 0: https://kitemaker.co

on “I failed to make LinkedIn fix their broken international domain URL parser”Emojis are what caused me to learn about unicode personally. We had a big bloated library handling emoji stuff for us in our product [0]. Then one day, someone said that they wanted the comment threads to behave more like Slack - that if only an emoji was typed in a comment (without any additional text), it should appear big, otherwise it should be small. This required detecting when text was only an emoji which req…

on “Emojis paved the way for UTF-8 everywhere”One mistake I (and no doubt other founders) made was assuming you'd "get it right" because you were scratching your own itch. My cofounder and I started our company [0] literally based on the pain points we were feeling and still, when the first user tests on the first version of the product came around, users didn't get it. Or they didn't see the value. It was a tough lesson - we were building the thing we thought…

on “A founder’s guide to understanding users”As part of an accelerator I did with my startup [0], I had the chance to check out a talk by Scott at https://salesqualia.com/ . While we have less of an enterprise sales approach and more of a bottom-up distribution approach, I still found Scott's structured approach to thinking about sales really useful. I recommend people check it out. 0: 0: https://kitemaker.co - the product management and collaboration tool tha…

on “Tips for Founders Doing Sales (From a Founder)”As a startup founder in Europe, who works what I think of as a lot, but also finds time to make dinner for my kids and read to them at night, this type of article always gives me anxiety and/or guilt.
