  3. Declarative programming is a great one, almost a magical experience. "It feels like I am sitting at the controls of a quantum computer. I've got all my qubits (terms) all wired together in some complicated expression and when power is applied every qubit will instantly collapse out of superposition and crystallize into a perfect answer." 13. > Dynamic linking, in the context of an OS which offers a curated list of packages in the form of an official package repository, means that a specialized third party is able to maintain a subcomponent of your system. You nailed it, in my opinion. The biggest reason I favor dynamic linking is not because of any inherent advantage that I'm determined to believe in (in the face of purported evidence to the contrary, l…

  23. There's also jshon which is a simple stack-based DSL for constructing JSON from shell scripts. http://kmkeen.com/jshon/ It's written in C and is not actively developed. The latest commit, it seems, was a pull request from me back in 2018 that fixed a null-termination issue that led to memory corruption. Because I couldn't rely on jshon being correct, I rewrote it in Haskell here: https://github.com/dapphub/dapptools…

  25. Thoughtful comment, thanks. I'm an Arch user as well and agree broadly with its approach to a desktop operating system. (I.e. stick as closely to upstream as possible.) That said, I disagree that this means maintainers are unnecessary middlemen, even though their role on a distribution like Debian is obviously more prominent. The essay I linked to in my top level comment is actually by an Arch maintainer, explaining…

  27. Over the last several weeks I was working on an essay about this exact problem, including the connection between static linking and bundling. This one is so well done that I probably won't even publish it. But I'll add this, for people who may not immediately see why this is important. I think that the real danger these new technologies represent is not inherently bad technology, but the possibility of ecosystem dam…
