What Hacker News says?

  1. To get the performance benefits the VM can't be run with a spice / vnc interface, so there is no virtual screen or virtual input. You have to pass the VM its GPU and some USB ports and can only see/interact through those and the network bridge. My keyboard and mouse can pair to multiple different machines at the same time and switch with a button press so I just do that. Synergy also works fine, you just need to tem…

  3. btw. Rendering images or movies on the TTY is common. fbida: https://www.kraxel.org/blog/linux/fbida/ mpv: https://mpv.io/ Fbida sometimes need the -d option pointing to /dev/drm/something, when using screen or tmux. MPV required for years -vo=drm on the TTY but since some months it always works. Nice improvement :) A display server is not needed.

  7. Neato! Many years back I was playing with Xpra for this, but it was in the days before either Docker or useful seccomp. Glad to see something making progress here. Have you looked at OpenGL virtualization e.g. Virgil ( https://virgil3d.github.io/ , https://www.kraxel.org/blog/tag/virgl/ ) for that problem? The idea is to use Gallium to give them just enough access to get host 3D acceleration, but not direct access t…

  9. you don't even need to run the gui and do all the greaskmonkey stuff, its overkill. just set up fbida ( https://www.kraxel.org/cgit/fbida/ ) its available packaged in most distros and you can set up the slideshow right through the command line using the framebuffer to show the images. I've built several picture frames this way.

  11. Seems like sixel would be an excellent solution, thanks very much for that pointer. However, I can always convert PDFs to images and go forward from there, I guess. It's not a bad workaround. The fbi image viewer is available for NetBSD's X Window system; not sure about the framebuffer port. https://www.kraxel.org/blog/linux/fbida/ EDIT: Apparently, NetBSD has lsix: https://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/g…
