What Hacker News says?
I also did an RSVP app many years ago. I did mine for j2me - http://kybernetikos.com/bookreader-and-bookreaderdeployer/ and read books from gutenberg on my mobile phone at the time. It had pause and jump forward/backward as many people in this thread are saying is important to them. The FAQ tries to make the claim that Spritz is not just another RSVP speed reader (although I'm not sure how much I believe it). > Read…

HN discussionI looked at this question a while back, and wrote this: https://kybernetikos.com/2007/12/03/atoms-of-english/ (blog is only up some of the time sadly, I'll fix it eventually). I took Websters dictionary from the project Gutenberg site. I started with 95712 words. After the initial throwing away of words that weren’t in any definitions, I was down to 4489 words. After expanding them, and throwing away words that were…

HN discussionI think the programming pattern paradigm is the right way to explain monads (as you can tell from my own monad explanation: https://kybernetikos.com/2012/07/10/design-pattern-wrapper-w... ) The category theory language around it is off-putting to working programmers, and many of the ways people explain it is by trying to introduce yet more terminology rather than just working with the perfectly adequate terminology…

HN discussionI started doing a similar calculation http://kybernetikos.com/2007/06/08/plastic-surgery-to-make-o... while I was at waiting for surgery which just goes to show how irrational I am. I think most people just hear the good things about it and don't properly evaluate the risks. I know I didn't.

on “Missing the Point of Promises”Actually, a decimal time works really well on a circular clock face: http://kybernetikos.github.io/UIT/ (you need to permit gps to get the correct rotation and drawn on light/dark periods). http://kybernetikos.com/2012/11/26/modern-times-a-new-clock/

on “Swatch Internet Time”I've been doing something like this since 2007 on code bases that run into the many hundreds of thousands of lines of code. It is actually the correct way to do classical inheritance in javascript, everything else is trimming, convenience, backwards compatibility or is simply wrong. In fact almost every other 'pattern' out there does this at the heart of it. So, for example you'll see some people use a surrogate ins…

on “The world's smallest and fastest classical JavaScript inheritance pattern”I've also (sorry!) written a blog about understanding monads as a design pattern http://kybernetikos.com/2012/07/10/design-pattern-wrapper-wi... It was motivated after I'd written a simple promises library and suddenly realised that promises are monads too.

on “Monads explained by Eric Lippert”That's a bit like my time system I've been pushing. http://kybernetikos.com/2012/11/26/modern-times-a-new-clock/ or just the clock http://kybernetikos.github.io/UIT/ You need to share your location so that it knows how to rotate the numbers on the face and how to draw the sunrise/sunset times on the dial.

on “Getting LASIK eye surgery”I think key management is a really big problem, as I say in my blog post 'I shouldn’t be trusted with anything as precious as my own private key'. http://kybernetikos.com/2013/06/22/how-do-we-make-encryption... I'm not so sure about the problems with webmail. I don't see why they would be significantly different from the problems associated with serving a web banking site, and there are plenty of those.
