Why HN links it
HN readers link Kyle Cordes's posts on Lua and Prolog, mostly as bare links or as sources in discussions of those languages. The comments do not judge his writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

This reminds me of something I did back in 2008, we were using Postgres, not SQLite, and we needed to get a backup from one production machine onto several other machines. Copying saturated the network for an hour - And we needed to copy four times if I remember right. We didn't want to wait four hours. I found this tool laying around "udpcast" and used it to send the backup over the network just once to all the des…

HN discussionAs an alternative to all of the above, consider UDPCast. It's point is that it can multicast; but it is also great for point-to-point copies. I adds its own reliability layer, so don't be scared of UDP in the name. It can rate limit, if you want. I've used it to great effect to shuffle a lot of GB to a bunch of servers at the time. Way down at a low level, the network hardware/firmware knows how to send data 1:N. Us…

HN discussionI briefly tried an arrangement like this, which has just one surface for both keyboard and monitor. It worked horribly for me, though perhaps I am odd. It works much better to have the keyboard at a good keyboard height, and monitors at a good monitor height. I've built a couple variations over time, see my 2010 version partway down this page: http://kylecordes.com/2010/standing-desk

HN discussionI use Prolog in production. :-) I know many people that do too and don't talk about it unless you move in the Prolog world. Here's a stock broker using it https://dtai.cs.kuleuven.be/CHR/files/Elston_SecuritEase.pdf Java Virtual Machine specifiction is verified using prolog ", implemented the Prolog verifier that formed the basis for the specification in both Java ME and Java SE." https://docs.oracle.com/javase/spec…

HN discussionI had some of the same issues. Happily (sadly?) I had them so badly and soon that I was able to return the Pre for a refund. Details here: http://kylecordes.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-first-impressions/

HN discussionUdpcast: http://www.udpcast.linux.lu/ Can do this and other related useful things, including multicast of a file to N machines in parallel. Don't let the UDP bother you: it implements retry/checksum/etc on top of datagrams. It's been around a few years, and is probably already in your distro. It can pipe, as well as copy files, I wrote about it some time ago: http://kylecordes.com/2008/multicast-your-db-backups-with…

HN discussionAs you have already discovered, storing that data on S3 is rather expensive. S3 is priced in a way that makes sense for hot, important, accessible data; not for idle permanent archives. I attacked a problem like this a few years ago, and found that the best solution at the time was to build servers with lots of big cheap hard drives and as little else as possible; similar to the BackBlaze idea but less impressive. I…

HN discussionThere are actually two separate questions here: 1) How long will this project take? The answer to this question is called an estimate, and there is a huge body of work about it. 2) Should I offer to do this project for a fixed-bid / quoted / whatever price? I think you've already assumed the answers to the second is "yes"; and perhaps you were right for the situation in front of you. Beware the "winner's curse", tho…

HN discussionI posted similar, mixed experiences here: http://kylecordes.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-first-impressions/ For example, the Pre browser "is so tedious that I find myself browsing less than before, even though I just got a slick new device." In spite of all that, the Pre is very slick, and I think (with some software updates) it stands a good chance of commercial success.

HN discussionThis isn't really a "vs", but if anyone needs to move issue data from GitHub Issues to JIRA, read on. I needed to do this a couple of years ago, and found there were numerous tools which tried to do it, but failed in various (sometimes awful) ways. I finally made my own solution. It is written in Clojure, but should be runnable by anyone with a general familiarity with command line tools and programming. Free, open…

on “Ask HN: Anyone use Prolog?”I first got into Lua when a number of years ago someone (thankfully) pointed me to it to save me writing my own scripting engine for an application. As one of those people crazily obsessed with pursuing simplicity, I really grew to appreciate Lua's design[1]. I started embedding it into any place I wanted simple extensibility in applications. Gradually I found myself writing more and more and more application code i…

on “Ask HN: Why Lua?”At the risk of sounding trendy: Mostly stand, then it hardly matters what kind of chair you have; and (at least in my case) the result is improved productivity and feeling better. http://kylecordes.com/2010/standing-desk More on-topic: I sat on an Aeron a few jobs ago, and really liked it. I've compared an Aeron side-by-side with several "clones" and found the real thing is a lot better. If you are going to sit all…
