This made the rounds on HN a few ... weeks? months? ago, and it's also about Arabic typesetting, and it's a very interesting read: https://lr0.org/blog/p/arabic/ I'm a little surprised that Nasri Khattar wasn't mentioned in it.

HN discussionI read this passage on the blog's diary page and I found it beautiful and poignant. https://lr0.org/diary/ > Last week I had an argument with my Mother of which I was righteous and she was in error. In the end, I managed to convince her of my points. She accepted them. But then she said, “Okay, what about mercy?”. She told me then about a man from town who once had a serious argument with his distant brother. Time p…

HN discussionIt was a typo in the url, should have pointed to https://lr0.org/blog/i/2025-12-27_18-21-51_screenshot.png instead. I fixed it, thanks!

HN discussion> If you are using Firefox or a Chromium browser (for me Google Chrome 143.0.7499.170), it's very likely that you are seeing a very foggy version of the painting, however, if you download the image and open it with your default image viewer (or open it in the Safari browser), you will see the image normally. Why does the page 404 when opening the image? Bandwidth issue? Firefox issue? (Yes, the username is a joke -…

HN discussionCool article, but the one it acknowledges and riffs off of, at https://lr0.org/blog/p/arabic/ , is much more informative, and tells all about how we got decent Arabic script rendering on our browers and OSs, but still notably imperfect. Which makes me think: come on, in the age of Claude, the gap between "we know what to do" and "here is the working code" is narrower than ever. Who will be the one to pick up the job…

HN discussionNo, it's not. (As should not be a surprise given how extensively LLMs are used to draft English-language articles these days.) It's actually incredibly blatant. Just look at this second paragraph: > The same six months I had closed three other tickets against the same product, each of which had presented to its filer as the only bug. A customer's name had appeared with its letters unjoined on a printed agreement, th…
