Why HN links it
HN readers link this Substack by Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie for networking and transport topics: replacing TCP in datacenters, congestion control, QUIC for RPC, and less commonly discussed networking concepts.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie, authors of "Computer Networks: A Systems Approach" explain the Internet – its technology, architecture, and evolution.

What Hacker News says?
This has already been done at scale with HTTP/3 (QUIC), it's just not widely distributed beyond the largest sites & most popular web browsers. gRPC for example is still on multiplexed TCP via HTTP/2, which is "good enough" for many. Though it doesn't really replace TCP, it's just that the predominant requirements have changed (as Ousterhout points out). Bruce Davie has a series of articles on this: https://systemsap…

HN discussionOsterhout tends to be prescient in his diagnoses, though not his solutions. Eg. His take on scripting languages filling a unique role that wouldn’t be replaced by system languages was pretty accurate; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ousterhout%27s_dichotomy , especially in the AI/ML community these days. His solution, Tcl/Tk, was niche though. On the supposed death of TCP, Bruce Davie posted a more nuanced take: https…

HN discussionThanks, yes I'm subscribed to the newsletter as well, what a surprise coincident when posting about open 5G on HN and receiving article exactly in the same subject later on the same day. HN discussionPart of what we're arguing in this article is that there is no good answer today because of the assumption that TCP was good enough. Homa is challenging that assumption (as many others have tried before). My view is that if you want something better than TCP for RPC today, QUIC is the best thing available, as discussed here: https://systemsapproach.substack.com/p/quic-is-not-a-tcp-rep... What you run over that for y…
