What Hacker News says?

  1. As a former American who lived abroad for about 11 years before renouncing, “cartoonishly cruel” is a pretty accurate description of the system. It’s even worse an American entrepreneur abroad because that makes things even more complicated. I gave up jumping through the hoops in 2018 and the self-torture and renounced. I shared my story in case anyone is interested: https://larrysalibra.com/goodbye-usa/

  3. Bitcoin does serve a useful purpose! It is perhaps not obvious to someone like you who don't seem to be a user. Or if you can't imagine how Bitcoin can help improve the world, you are probably only considering your little bubble, and not thinking about the other 7 billion human beings who are much less fortunate than you, economically, professionally, politically, financially. Overall, Bitcoin reduces friction, enab…

  7. As many have noted, you can't tell from this site whether apple decided to remove an app from the China app store or the developer decided never offer it in that coutnry. Because of that, it's not useful for calling out censorship. We do know, however, that Apple does certain certain apps and functionality on device for China. Censorship of the News app is one such example: https://www.larrysalibra.com/how-apple-cen…

  9. I’m the one that “broke” the story the author mentioned as being reported in 2015. At the time, the team at the New York Times reached out to a source at Apple that confirmed that this behavior was intentional: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/12/technology/apple-is-said-... iOS disables Apple news based on the mobile country code / network code and not on the name in my experience. If your iOS device doesn’t have ce…

  11. VAT is different than sales tax. Sales tax is charged on the sales price while VAT is charged on every step of the production process. VAT is very hard to avoid. All of the inputs to your business have to have VAT charged on them - if your business didn't pay VAT on your business expenses in China, you can't deduct them as expenses, which increases the business tax you pay. Several years ago, when I still had a busi…

The same state-owned Chinese carriers will sell you products in Hong Kong that when used in mainland China let you circumvent the great firewall. https://www.larrysalibra.com/hop-over-the-great-firewall-wit... 15. Jabber/XMPP is now over 25 years old. Its peak was back when Google Talk and Facebook Chat adopted it in the late 2000s and when Whatsapp launched using XMPP under the hood. And it largely died when those two large companies went fully proprietary around 2015. The fact that 25 years later it's still being described as two completely different names with a slash between them ("Jabber" SLASH "XMPP" ) makes me pretty c…

  17. The article is rather light on details on what Didi actually did better, but from using Uber as a foreigner in China, I could see significant problems in Uber's product execution: 1. The Android app continues to use Google Maps which is Great Firewall blocked, meaning I had to use a VPN to load uncached tiles. 2. Uber in turn IP blocks EC2, preventing me from using my main VPN while in app. 3. Entities on the map ar…

  23. Hi HN! I'm the one NYT quoted in this article. The creepy thing about this is that it does this while ignoring the user's location privacy settings and even if users are using a VPN or roaming (ie. data hits the Internet in user's home country instead of in China). There are more details about how I tested this at the Hong Kong/China border on my blog: https://www.larrysalibra.com/how-apple-censors-news-in-china...

  25. Ben's article "distills" down to 2 reasons that US frontier labs shouldn't be "afraid": 1. US frontier lab unit economics are better 2. US frontier labs are moving up the stack making tools that are "stickiness" and will prevent users from switching. For 1...he doesn't provide any evidence for US lab unit economics being better...the major input to unit economics is electricity...which is cheaper in China. And build…
