Why HN links it
HN readers link Leah Rowe's posts on cat(1) performance and on GPL licensing, including a piece urging relicensing to GPLv3-only. One comment gives context on the author as a Libreboot developer.

What Hacker News says?
The original performance claim was about https://vimuser.org/cat.c.txt . Which just does read/write - so it's the same as the "cat-simple" example, which is the slowest listed. GNU cat [0] does copy_file_range if it can and falls back to a read/write loop otherwise, so it's unlikely to be much slower (possibly some overhead from argument parsing, but that's just a constant). So the performance claims are wrong. [0]:…

HN discussionTo add some context, the author, who is a Libreboot developer, is running a transgender support group[0]. This is interesting because a significant part of the accusations against RMS have been around transphobia[1] for refusing to use "they" for singular[2]. Hence she may have concerns about GPLv4 being more permissive, but it may be just as much about showing support for RMS as a person. [0]: https://vimuser.org/…
