  1. I do wonder about that, could it be battery operation? I know when I'm out using my GoPro on the slopes the battery will die very quickly when it's a super cold day. I blogged a while back about a possible problem of using Macs at altitude when it comes to battery swelling: http://leejo.github.io/2019/07/27/altitude_sickness/ Anyway, on the original topic here's a talk on the [mis]use of CAPTCHAs which is definitely…

  3. I wrote about this recently[1]. The "problem" with RSS, that essentially lead to it falling out of favour, is that it is pure consumption, not interaction. You can't "like" an update that comes to you via RSS, nor comment, nor easily share. It's difficult for sites to monetise it, or track, or promote their own agenda. It's not "social" and since every other site these days needs to be social, whether through aforem…

  7. I may do so, eventually. Related - I gave a talk a couple of weeks ago about banking interchange formats, which is related to all of this. The slides are here (top one) and the recording of the talk (which I will link) should appear soon: https://leejo.github.io/code/

  9. I don't disagree with anything you've said either, in fact I've blogged about this at length: http://leejo.github.io/2017/12/17/tpc_and_the_end_of_languag... My main issue is that "People still use Perl?" has essentially become a meme at this point. I'm relatively sure that any sufficiently commented on or upvoted thread on HN gets that statement in it somewhere. Yes, Perl is still used. Extensively. People and comp…

  11. The article alludes to something I've noticed since upgrading from the 5c to an 11 pro last year - The computational aspect and/or current hardware limitations mean these phones can shoot images that look great on the phone . I mean, you scroll past images on Instagram, look at your own photos on the phone you took them with, look at your images on your Instagram feed on other people's phones or on the Instagram web…

  15. I may blog about this next year, again[^1], as I'm working on a project that sort of covers it - not in a way that will answer the question but more observational. Anyway, I feel Perl's popularity was hugely exaggerated in the mid to late 90s and early 00s. The alternatives were either not there in terms of language and toolchain features, ease of use, "whipuptitude" or whatever, or library support (CPAN was a kille…

  17. Here are some figures off the top of my head, as a user of Hasselblad V (film) systems for approaching 15 years. All the work on my site (link in "about" page) is shot with Hasselblad film cameras. Mostly with the 6x6 V cameras. A top spec Epson flatbed+negative scanner will cost you in the region of $500. This will allow you to scan medium format film at a quality more than adequate for web stuff and also for print…

  19. Can confirm. Here's a 20 minute exposure of Orion + moonlight over the Grand Muveran I shot in the village a couple of years ago: https://leejo.github.io/images/2018/large_format/36_muveran_... # this is shot on 4x5 film, and unfortunately Fuji don't make Acros in this size anymore ( fortunately I stocked up on it).

  21. I was immensely frustrated by the Brexit campaign and outcome. I haven't said anything about this online, other than a short photo essay[1], so this is the one time i'll allow myself to vent. My personal opinion, possibly misjudged given my age (mid thirties), is that the problems the UK is seeing (especially in the areas that voted leave) stem from the actions of the Thatcher government and have little to do with a…

  23. This might also be that DJI have owned Hasselblad for a while now, so they're sort of already in that space and Fuji don't want them to dominate it [too much]. Fuji's high resolution offerings are superior to Hasselblad's (IMHO) and cost half as much. They could eat up this market quite easily. If you're wondering what benefit these cameras have in that space, here's a few photos I shot on a flight last year with on…

  25. Somewhat related, the Forint still officially has minor units but practically they're never used except in some cases where they're for display only. Frustratingly some banks don't use them in transactional data, which can lead to interesting bugs: https://leejo.github.io/2015/08/02/a_lot_of_huf/
