Personal blog · lenzg.netsystemsprogramming
Lenz Grimmer's personal blog at lenzg.net covers systems and programming. Since 2014, 3 different Hacker News readers have linked it 3 times. The last post was in 2014, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Linked for posts about MySQL and LVM snapshot backups, including the author's mylvmbackup tool, and for a trackball design. The comments only cite the tool and posts and do not evaluate the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
What Hacker News says?
Agreed. I've been successfully using mylvmbackup on 10gb+ databases for a few years now. http://www.lenzg.net/mylvmbackup/

on “Show HN: Stellar – Git for PostreSQL and MySQL”I still miss my Trackman Marble FX. Never found a trackball design as elegant and useable as it was. https://www.lenzg.net/uploads/images/Trackman_Marble_FX.jpg

on “Ploopy Classic 2 open source trackball”> Snapshotting is natively supported on Windows and Macs, not sure about linux. JFTR, this is supported on Linux as well and, especially when using LVM, is quite simple and straightforward. You can do it manually [0,1] or using tools made for just this purpose, such as mylvmbackup [2] (which should be available in most distribution's package repositories). --- [0]: https://www.badllama.com/content/mysql-backups-usin…
