HN discussionI've gone through several thousand papers the past year or two so I feel like I'm more well-versed in nutrition than most nutritionists/dieticians at this point, certainly in my understanding the recent clinical/research literature. I rarely post any nutritional/health related statements without citations to peer-reviewed work (see: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=lhl ) I think most people don't publish labs…

HN discussion Here's a pretty comprehensive review I wrote on it a few months back: https://randomfoo.net/2019/12/25/motile-m142-cheapo-linux-la... It's surprisingly good as a cheap laptop, but as a daily driver, I'd just wait a month or so and get a 4000U thin and light at this point.

HN discussionI definitely support the author's message: have a point, use pictures, prepare. My style is derived from Lawrence Lessig's Free Culture (Flash, but legendary: https://randomfoo.net/oscon/2002/lessig/free.html ) and Edward Tufte (with whom I was fortunate enough to work for one summer).

HN discussion"Lawrence Lessig’s Free Culture talk at the 2002 Open Source Conference. The master of the simple slides shows us how it’s done. And since, as he says, this is his 100th time for this talk, he has this bad boy down solid. Even though this talk is from 2002, his slide presentation style is still as fresh today as Axe Body Spray."[1] http://randomfoo.net/oscon/2002/lessig/free.html [1] http://www.knowhr.com/blog/2006/…

HN discussionI see you are in Britain, where copyright originally developed. As I recall, the history was a couple of publishers trying to bloody each other (1). It had nothing to do with whether a merchant wanted to transcribe copies of Hamlet to share with friends practising for the local theatre production 50 years after Shakespeare's death. The principle profits had already been wrung out. In the US, the copyright exists To…

HN discussionMost of the slides are blank, single sentences, or changes in highlighting. I'm sure they were flipping through them pretty quickly and just using slides to give certain phrases extra punch. See also: Lawrence Lessig's presentation on Free Culture ( http://randomfoo.net/oscon/2002/lessig/free.html ) That's probably 1000 slides, but they are used expertly to deliver a clear, concise message.

HN discussionSame. Additionally the last time I saw Verified by Visa the domain it used was registered to some rando's apartment in NYC. Super sketchy. HN discussionI dunno, I gave up on Wirecutter for anything I actually cared about almost 10 years ago - I found that for anything that I had actually done even basic research on, the Wirecutter was always wrong (and not just like sort of wrong, but like completely missing the point/out to lunch wrong): https://randomfoo.net/2014/03/22/the-wirecutter-is-always-wr...

on “What Happened to Wirecutter?”I actually have a different take on what the "basic" problem is, having done a fair amount of research (reading a lot of biomed research & studies over the past few years) and personally effecting (and more or less maintaining) a huge improvement in my own metabolic health. [1] To me, it seems obvious that sustaining a low calorie diet (LCD) long-term is basically impossible (from a maximal fat oxidation and, even a…
