Why HN links it
HN commenters link a 2009 post on forking Ruby gems and using them on servers, and cite it again when discussing gem sources and trust via signing. Both comments only cite the post; none judge the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
That's really a bummer... I loved being able to fork a ruby lib, make some changes and have the gem available for any servers I used... You still can. See: http://litanyagainstfear.com/blog/2009/10/09/on-gem-forking/

HN discussionTo be honest, the same problem exists for RubyForge, since you could build/release a gem with a user name prefix and it doesn't check. The short answer is: be explicit with what source you're looking at, and start looking into gem signing/certs since it's the way we can trust gems. More info here: http://litanyagainstfear.com/blog/2009/10/09/on-gem-forking/ *Edit: Looks like rufo already cleared this up...thanks man!
