What Hacker News says?

  1. I suppose The Barefoot Architect by Johan van Lengen[0] is a nice introduction to low-tech solutions for enthusiasts. The caveat is that I loved reading the ideas in it but never got around to try any of them, so I can't vouch for how it works out in practice. Beats big debt all to hell, as well as the sort of grind-immersion that more and more are realizing is unhealthy and unsustainable. Surprising to find that the old guru of 'enoughism' Lloyd Kahn ('Shelter' editor of Whole Earth Catalog) is online and still kicking. Anyone interested in alternative shelter will find inspiration in his books. [ https://www.lloydkahn.com/ ]

  4. Time to throw in a mention for the homes of Lloyd Kahn. https://www.shelterpub.com/ There's plenty to discuss about houses (if you've got time on your hands), but give me a pretty good home. Green? Where I grew up you could drive around in the woods and see old abandoned log houses turning back into land and a few rocks, all on their own. A worthy goal to work towards. Lloyd's still kicking and blogging. https://www…

Yeah, if memory serves, the reviewer in this case was 'housing' editor at Whole Earth. At the time he was into geodesic domes and Buckminster Fuller, a worldview and technology he would shortly disavow. The reviewer's blog is worth a look if you're up for a bit of architectural hippydom. [1] As for Gen X. Well, My Morning Jack apparently did an album inspired by the Whole Earth Catalog.
