What Hacker News says?

  1. It's a 4x8 grid, like I said. https://lukeshu.com/dump/miniwi-grid.png Weird that the lowercase letters with ascenders are taller than normal uppercase, I didn't notice that. But yeah, the core numbers+uppercase box is 3x5 (with only "Q" violating that). And it's all on a 4x8 grid.

  5. How I handle that: .var.%: FORCE @printf '%s' '$(subst ','\'',$($*))' | sed 's|^|#|' | $(WRITE_IFCHANGED) $@ -include $(wildcard .var*) .PHONY: FORCE Where WRITE_IFCHANGED is a program that essentially does 'cat > $1', but only if doing so would create or change the file. https://lukeshu.com/git/autothing/tree/build-aux/write-ifcha... Then, if a file depends on the value of a variable, I have it depend on .var.VARNA…

  7. That didn't sound right to me, but I looked it up, and you're right. The scripts we're discussing were written in 2002 [1], so the time-appropriate version is POSIX-2001 (Issue 6). [1]: https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd/commit/55d0b8395514ae4055... But you don't have to take my word for it: I've paste-bin'ed the entirety of what POSIX-2001 had to say about shell built-ins (in general, I didn't include man-pages for…

  9. In the email I received, it's a non-ASCII apostrophe encoded in UTF-8. The email headers say "Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1", but then the HTML body says "<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/>". Clients that give preference to the header will get it wrong. The full raw email: https://lukeshu.com/dump/startcom-email.txt

  11. One major thing is that there is so much inconsistency. Several posters here have commented on how find is a terrible tool with weird syntax. It's not actually terrible or weird, it's just different... because it pre-dates most everything else. And it is hard to know how to ask the computer how to use the tools. Is the flag you need in `cmd -h` (traditional) or `cmd -help` (X11) or `cmd --help` (GNU) or `cmd --usage…

A pretty good investigation into this matter - "segfaults in Java (redux)": https://www.lukeshu.com/blog/java-segfault-redux.html Read the prior article for some context, too ..
