What Hacker News says?

  1. Rentable Mac Mini (or Mac colo of all flavors) has been a thing for easily 15+ years. https://www.macstadium.com/ is one of the original providers if I recall correctly. I remember renting a macmini for a month when the app store on ios first came out because I couldn't afford a macbook. AWS is largely taking other peoples efforts and putting the Amazon brand on them.

  3. If the current offering is Mac Minis, chances are Amazon has built an industrial grade version of what https://www.macstadium.com/ offers, and have racks with tons of Mac Minis, probably with custom ducting for A/C and so forth.

  11. Why? AWS manages to do it ( https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/mac/ ). Smaller companies too - https://macstadium.com Having used both professionally, once you understand how to drive Apple's MDM, Mac OS is as easy to sysadmin as Linux. I'll grant you it's a steep learning curve, but so is Linux/BSD if you're coming at it fresh. In certain ways it's easier - if you buy a device through Apple Business you can…

  23. The other problem with Xcode is that it won’t run on anything except a Mac, and MacOS licensing prevents one from running it on non-Mac hardware or virtualizing it. That’s why services like https://www.macstadium.com/ and AWS mac instances exist, but it’s very annoying to have to work around this just because of dinosaur business models and licensing.

  29. MacStadium is hiring for some super important roles. Specifically, we're looking to make our first SRE hire at the intersection of Kubernetes and MacOS virtualization. We're also looking to hire a team of developers (including a lead) for migrating our back-office admin and GraphQL API from a mix of TypeScript and PHP to Django. You can apply to either the IC or lead role through the "Automation Engineer" posting. h…
