What Hacker News says?

  1. This is the most pimped out microwave I know of: https://madebynathan.com/2013/07/10/raspberry-pi-powered-mic... Using a raspberry pi, this microwave was modified.

  7. > hugo, the binary ... (it must not break your website between releases) I wrote a little blog post about my experience with Hugo - https://madebynathan.com/posts/2021-12-05-how-docker-saved-m... I struggled with this issue when I realized that it was too much work to update my blog to use the latest version of Hugo. I wasn't able to run the old hugo binary on my new version of MacOS (segfault). And I couldn't even…

  9. I installed a custom firmware on my ESP32-powered smart kettle and made it respond with the HTTP status code "418 I'm a teapot". [1] I used an ESP32 to automate my kitchen rangehood light and fan [2]. I've flashed ESPHome on few smart outlets and powerboards. A lot of WiFi enabled devices that you buy in stores are actually white-labelled "Tuya" products, and there's a big community effort to hack the ESP32 chips an…

  13. As a programmer, I find electronic circuits insanely hard to reason about. It's like looking at a computer program where every single line runs concurrently. Maybe I need to approach it from a different angle. But I love it, and I learned a ton when I was hacking away on my microwave [1]. 19. This is one the many reasons why I would never buy another iPhone if it couldn't be jailbroken. It seems weird that 'hacker news' readers aren't more excited about 'hacking' the incredible computer in their pockets. We don't need to beg developers to support Chrome if we can just change the default browser ourselves - http://i.imgur.com/f50Kxl.png Other reasons to jailbreak: * Grooveshark - Seems to have a bigger mu…

  29. On Linux (where pbcopy and pbpaste apparently don't exist), I've been using a bash function `cb` (to copy clipboard) and `cbf` (to copy a file to a clipboard) for years. If you install xclip on your system and add this to your .bashrc you can get it too: https://gist.github.com/FreedomBen/8d4d0a89fd39c8b5a5c4d5dcf... Luckily I added a link to where I got it, because I had long forgotten. Thanks Nathan! Nathan's blog…
