Too few sampled comments (5) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Linked for posts on open source design work, such as Fedora design bounties and contributor tasks, and on Linux cgroups, including ideas for a cgroups user interface.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Open design forever.
What Hacker News says?
You're in luck -- I've done a screencast on cgroups where I explain what they are and how you can use them @ http://sysadmincasts.com/episodes/14-introduction-to-linux-c... Also, it is all command line at this point, but there are some concepts floating around about creating a gui @ http://mairin.wordpress.com/2011/05/13/ideas-for-a-cgroups-u...

HN discussionOne interesting thing about the Gnome Shell design process is that it has been very open and responsive. Although there was a heavy focus on creating design principles up front, the actual design has evolved a lot over the few years that the project has been active. The overview of the current design at http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design has many relevant links that you can explore if you're interested. I know…

HN discussionBlahah, your http://solvers.io initiative seems super cool! We've found over the years that having one specific task for new contributors to complete makes a huge difference in attracting that next contributor. See http://mairin.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/second-fedora-design-... for a really successful effort along those lines. on “OpenHatch – Find open source projects to contribute to; find mentors”Most large open source projects have a 'design' or 'artwork' team, who actively seek contributions, for example: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design http://art.gnome.org/ become a design ninja by completing one of the fedora bounties: http://mairin.wordpress.com/ Try googling for <favourite project>+design, or <favourite project>+artwork. For smaller projects, just do something and then show it to the dev's - expla…

on “Ask HN: How can I contribute to Open Source as a Designer?”Yeah, that would be cool. I just searched around to see if anyone did this, and it looks like someone thought about some ideas, and even put together some mockups [1, 2, 3]. This would actually be a really powerful tool via a nice UI, since you have to get your hands pretty dirty to use these effectively, but if this just had a task manager type interface, this would be really slick.
