Why HN links it

HN readers link Makina Corpus for posts on GIS terrain data (DEM file formats and reprojection) and for a write-up on why WordPress-style CMSs are hard to replace.

The best articles for this are [1] (google translate it) and [2]. In [1], the author uses .asc files while in [2], .img files are used. You can treat these files as basically the same as .hgt but remember to reproject the data as different DEM sources uses slightly different projections. 3. We've talked several times with my colleagues about this, and we ended up writing things down : http://makina-corpus.com/blog/metier/2014/why-cms-will-not-d... TL;DR : The sheer amount of work to get at least to the level expected by the users outweights most motivations. Maybe one day someone will come with a way better solution, one which Wordpress cannot cope with. And then, we will have another cycle. ;)
