Manjeet Singh writes maderix’s Substack, a personal blog at maderix.substack.com about ai, programming and hardware. Since 2026, 6 different Hacker News readers have linked it 6 times, most often “Inside the M4 Apple Neural Engine, Part 1: Reverse Engineering”. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-06-25, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN commenters link this Substack for reverse-engineering Apple's M4 Neural Engine (ANE), including Part 2's benchmarks of about 6.6 FLOPS/W and the chip powering fully down when idle. Comments cite it as a source only.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
I write about explorations and experiments with AI models.

What Hacker News says?
Part 2 has benchmarks: https://maderix.substack.com/p/inside-the-m4-apple-neural-en... 6.6 FLOPS/W, plus the ability to completely turn off when not in use, so 0W at idle.

HN discussionA few months back someone reverse-engineered private ANE APIs and shown some significant performance improvements compared to CoreML and Metal, on both inference and training. - https://maderix.substack.com/p/inside-the-m4-apple-neural-en... - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47257931

HN discussionIt is possible but requires a very specific model design to utilize. As this reverse engineering effort has shown [0] "The ANE is not a GPU. It’s not a CPU. It’s a graph execution engine." To build one requires using a specific pipeline specifically for CoreML [1]. [0] https://maderix.substack.com/p/inside-the-m4-apple-neural-en...
