What Hacker News says?

  1. Let's use AI to test the validity of an AI generated clickbait article. Fable 5.1 was presented with the following prompt to do research. > https://manualdousuario.net/en/libreoffice-download-record-n... states an interesting causality. Generate an artifact that tests this claim. Is it causal or coincidental. ie if libreoffice downloads have been increasing every release then it's possible to claim any recent featur…

  5. I treat WhatsApp as a hostile app[1], which means I deny any access to my stuff even if I get a subpar experience. In places where it's required (as where I live), this is the bare minimum a privacy-minded person can do. [1] https://manualdousuario.net/en/a-less-affectionate-approach-...

  7. > There should be a rule that any assertion of conspiracy must at least have some evidence. Broadly, I agree, and good grief do I wish people would follow this more often. But Google specifically has acted incredibly anti-competitively for several years now [0], especially regarding Android. This has gone on for such a long time that they have, in my mind, lost the benefit of any doubt. As they continue to lock down…

  11. The appeal, at least for me, is having a social layer on top of your own stuff. Are you familiar with POSSE (Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere)? With AP you skip the whole second part because it's automatically syndicated everywhere the moment you post on your own site. I'm having good results with the WordPress ActivityPub plugin on my blog[1]. [1] https://manualdousuario.net/en/

  17. I run a good and old tech blog[0] in Brazil for almost a decade. It's been my main income source since 2020, and I'm making more than I did in my last job in a traditional newsroom. I actively avoid programmatic/invasive ads. My three income sources are: subscriptions (without paywalling anything), direct advertising deals, and content deals with other, bigger publications (they get priority to publish my stuff firs…

  19. Not sure if I'm flattered or offended by this comparison :) This humble blog is an effort to bring my work to a broader, English-speaking audience.
