What Hacker News says?

  1. $240M Revenue? Holy CRAP! As I predicted some time ago - http://marcgayle.com/how-dropbox-is-printing-money - I am pretty sure that once Dropbox reveals their profit margins, the world will be stunned. Mark. My. Words.

  3. I can't wait for them to go public and we can take a look at their financials properly. I suspect they will surprise many people - as I had predicted back in 2011 - http://marcgayle.com/2011/01/24/how-dropbox-is-printing-mone... Much hasn't changed....I don't think.

  5. This is brilliant...I am glad someone finally ran with it. I wrote a blog post about this almost 2 years ago - http://marcgayle.com/2010/01/08/a-legal-botnet-billion-dolla... There are many applications for this - including fighting DDOS attacks. There are still huge technical challenges with that particular application, but as I understand it...the only way to fight a DDOS is to a) get bigger guns, or b) lie down a…

  9. I really don't think people understand the implications of Dropbox's model. I think I stumbled upon it - http://marcgayle.com/how-dropbox-is-printing-money - so I am not surprised with this level of decadence. At the rate at which they are going, I can almost guarantee you that their public filings - or the first public confirmation of their financials - will be bombshellish (if it is anything like I suspect, and I…

  13. I also strongly disagree with this. Github is the perfect example of this strategy working today. It's a bit different than examples of yore, but certainly still quite lucrative. I wrote a post about this sometime ago: http://marcgayle.com/githubs-brilliant-organic-traffic-acqui... I can bet that if Github released their traffic data like Stack Overflow did, a large portion of their traffic would show that it comes…

  15. This scenario is where my previously discussed startup idea would do really well - if someone could pull it off - http://marcgayle.com/2010/01/08/a-legal-botnet-billion-dolla... A completely distributed web host, hosted on people's machines. A lot more difficult to shut down (although, I guess if enough government pressure was put on some local chokepoint, it could be a problem). But if it was designed in such a way…

  17. Oh absolutely. Dropbox is reaching the point where now my father and mother use it. It hasn't reached Facebook levels yet (by that I mean, my grandmother ;)), but it is getting there. But with each incremental user, Dropbox's value increases in an e^x fashion. For more on why I think so, here is a more detailed breakdown: http://marcgayle.com/how-dropbox-is-printing-money There is no reason that Dropbox's growth wil…
