  1. There are other products that are at similar enough risk that this angle should be taken seriously - ex: https://dgraph.io and https://materialize.com .

  3. Congrats on the milestone! I've been following for a while - awesome to see the progress you've made. Q: What are your plans for sharding / scale-out? At Notion, we run ~480 logical schemas spread across ~32 Postgres databases [1]. Our data model [2] (sorry for the blog post spam) has a recursive / graph-like structures, and we make use of columns or jsonb attributes like ` { table: Table, id: UUID }` which sounds l…

  5. Postgres can do a form of pub/sub with triggers on table change events, pg_notify. For anything more complicated get Postgres to publish all its changes using Change Data Capture to a Materialize instance. With Materialize, every query can push live updates to an app server, whenever the results change. Debounce a little and push the html, ideally don’t overwrite something the user is editing. The Materialize folks…

  9. Miri is good, but it still has very significant large limitations. And the recommendation of using Miri is unlikely to apply to using similar tools for many other programming languages, given the state of UB in the Rust ecosystem, as recommended by https://materialize.com/blog/rust-concurrency-bug-unbounded-... https://zackoverflow.dev/writing/unsafe-rust-vs-zig >If you use a crate in your Rust program, Miri will al…

  15. SAFETY comments do not magically make unsafe Rust correct nor safe. And Miri cannot catch everything, and is magnitudes slower than regular program running. https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/commit/71f5cfb21f3fd2f1740... https://materialize.com/blog/rust-concurrency-bug-unbounded-...

  17. Wrong, for any reasonable definition of memory safety, languages like Java and Javascript are memory safe. Java has escape hatches, but the necessity and prevalence of those escape hatches are way, way less than that of Rust. Consider for instance a standard library implementation of a collection in Java and Rust. In Java, there would typically AFAIK rarely ever be even a single usage of escape hatches. For Rust, th…
