Why HN links it

HN commenters link this blog's posts for numeric estimates and data, including Earth's curvature over a measured distance, WWII ship and tank production, and radiation dose from smoking versus flying.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. With distances that big, is it even necessary to slow down much? The depth of focus is probably a couple dozen AU? Even if it takes the probe a century to get there, if you can squeeze a decade or two of observation out of it without slowing down, there's no reason to bother and instead send a new upgraded telescope every decade or so. As far as power requirements go, assuming a doubled power demand from Hubble migh…

  3. The earth is just much much much bigger than in the diagram so the effect is within the margin of error for the measurement he was taking. It's actually measurable on a human scale: https://www.mathscinotes.com/2017/01/effect-of-earths-curvat... 1 5/8" difference over 693', or slightly less than 1 part in 5 thousand --- definitely measurable on a smaller scale with accurate machinists' tools.

  4. The US completed 542 liberty ships in 1942, and 1943 was their peak production year: https://www.mathscinotes.com/2018/05/liberty-ship-production... They reduced liberty ship production in 1944 to produce warships (which are more complex and were produced in much lower numbers)

  5. I don't think that "industry capacity" is problem for nuclear option. That problem is in peoples minds and public opinion thanks to Chernobyl and Fukushima. 6. Hey thanks you're absolutely right. Just to save people some time, here are some Google hits for that and its geometric representation: https://www.britannica.com/video/185388/equation-theory-ener... https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/6202/does-e-mc2-... So for massless particles your E=sqrt(m^2c^4 + p^2c^2) formula becomes E=sqrt(p^2c^2) which simplifies to the formula for photon momentum p=E/c (aka light…

  7. Answer: For each flight, you get 2.3 cigarettes worth of radioactivity. You would need to fly 4572 East-West coast flights per year to reach same dose as from smoking 1.5 packs of cigarettes per day. --- Data points: Smoking 1.5 packs of cigarettes per day is equivalent to between 60 and 160 milliSievert per year http://mathscinotes.com/2014/01/radiation-exposure-from-ciga...
