Why HN links it
HN readers cite Matias Singers' posts on rendering emoji as text using the U+FE0E variant selector, and on the Spotify international pricing index. Comments link them as sources rather than praising them.

What Hacker News says?
I think it would be acceptable to support emojis, but set the font to use the black/white ones rather than colour. That removes most of the distraction. At present, this can be done by following any emoji character with the text variant selector, U+FE0E [1] (the example works perfectly on Firefox on KDE). Later, it will be possible with CSS [2]. HN discussionIt’s actually down to what Unicode you use. We ran into this on Standard Ebooks tooling for return-to-text arrows in the endnotes, and the solution is to add a U+FE0E character after the emoji to indicate a textual rendering is preferred. HN discussionNo its not. One does not include VAT, other does. In Dropbox example both include VAT. You can see this tendency clearly in digital games. When I worked with games pricing for MacOS, I asked why such a huge difference? Boss replied: "It is the easiest to force Europeans into premium costs". There is even a chrome extension which shows how much a game costs in different countries on Steam website: Buy Sid Meier's Civ…

HN discussionGreat idea! I actually had no clue how to do the color scale, and I ended up doing it with 5 different colors based on quantile. Did a small write up with my thoughts about it: http://mts.io/2014/05/07/spotify-pricing-index/ Will revisit the map with these color changes.
