Matthew Plant's personal blog at maplant.com covers programming and systems. Since 2018, 12 different Hacker News readers have linked it 16 times, most often “Writing a Simple Garbage Collector in C”. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-03-26, and you can follow it by feed.

Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog for its garbage collector walkthrough with C code, which one commenter found really helpful for learning GC. Comments also point to its posts on writing a Scheme and on a minimal virtual machine.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

I love taking the address of labels. Back in highschool I wrote a couple of articles on using them to create JIT compilers: http://maplant.com/jit_bf.html http://dginasa.blogspot.com/2012/05/jit-compilation-without-...

HN discussionYou mention parallel computation and being open for discussion. My favourite area of computing is parallel computing and multithreading. My toy multithreaded interpreter in Java can communicate integers between threads with message passing. I never got around to communicating complicated objects because I'm not sure how to solve the garbage collection problem with compound data structures/object graphs AND sending o…

HN discussionif you need code to understand garbage collection, there is walkthrough of garbage collector and C code at http://maplant.com/gc.html is really helpful. I tweaked it to work on amd64 and started adding register scanning based on what eatonphil's discord people told me to do. https://github.com/samsquire/garbage-collector It's not fit for any purpose but more of a learning exercise.

HN discussionThis is very interesting. Thank you for submitting. I recently took the source code of the GC on https://maplant.com/gc.html And updated it to work with amd64 and added primitive register scanning. The code might be helpful to someone learning https://GitHub.com/samsquire/garbage-collector One of my ideas is to see if we can do memory management by the absence of a keyword rather than the presence of a keyword. So w…
