What Hacker News says?

  1. Oh, totally. I myself have written on how GitHub manages to make client side navigation 2x slower than full page reload: https://yoyo-code.com/why-is-github-ui-getting-so-much-slowe...

  3. I came across a blog post[1] (HN thread[2]) recently that sheds some light on the issue. The tl;dr is that the PR view can render over 100 000 DOM nodes, many of which are invisible inline SVG nodes, and SPA routing makes navigation a lot slower. I really love this point: https://yoyo-code.com/programming-breakthroughs-we-need/#pro... In my day-to-day JavaScript programming adventures, I typically encounter issues around paths and how they're imported. There has been so much energy devoted to parsing a string and reading the file it (probably) points to, and we just assume that what we're importing from that file is actually what is in it. Maintaining all of…

  7. I liked the section on testing[0]. I tend to write far more testing code, than the CuT, itself. Many of my various widgets have test harnesses that are, in and of themselves, full-fat, App Store-ready apps. I find test harnesses are generally better (for me), than unit tests[1]. I was just thinking about this, this morning. I'm what people refer to as a "crusty oldtimer." I wrote my first program (Machine Code) in 1…

  9. I wrote a blog post about this a while ago if you're interested: https://yoyo-code.com/how-to-build-better-social-media/ I think it's difficult but very interesting problem. There are some interesting attempts, like Maven, and a bunch of individually working aspects of existing platforms, but so far nothing seems to be clearly a win overall in my opinion.

  11. I can relate quite a bit. I've experienced this state of overwhelm a few times and I developed some interventions for myself over time. I wrote post about it, if you want to take some inspiration: https://yoyo-code.com/managing-information-diet/

  13. I wrote a nostalgic post on opera mini few weeks ago ( https://yoyo-code.com/love-letter-to-opera-mini/ ) and somebody linked a project that does similar architecture but running chrome in the cloud instead, to enable feature phones to use the internet - https://developer.cloudfone.com/ Operators in India and some other countries sell phones where this is pre-installed and websites have to be specially adjusted for…

  15. I think agree (but I think I think about this maybe a one level higher). I wrote about this a while ago in https://yoyo-code.com/programming-breakthroughs-we-need/#edi... . One interesting thing I got in replies is Unison language (content adressed functions, function is defined by AST). Also, I recommend checking Dion language demo (experimental project which stores program as AST). In general I think there's a mis…

  17. This is good diagnosis of the problem. I found that often the right solution is to ditch the hierarchy and use flat structure. I wrote about this some time ago: https://yoyo-code.com/embrace-flatness/ Big insight in that article is also from https://matklad.github.io/2021/08/22/large-rust-workspaces.h... about structuring large rust workspaces as a flat list.
