Why HN links it
HN readers link this Postgres full-text search post as a reference for using Postgres instead of a separate search engine like Elasticsearch. Many commenters cite it in threads on search and databases.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 15 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Anectodal note: A few years ago we added yet-another part to our product and, whilst ES worked "okay", we got a bit weary of ES due to "some issues" (some bug in the architecture keeping things not perfect in sync, certain queries with "joins" of types taking long, demand on HW due to the size of database, no proper multi-node setup due to $$$ and time constraint, etc.; small things piling up over time). Bright idea…

HN discussionThis has been around for a while but it's a great summary of what Postgres can do: http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... In my experience performance is great if you're just doing text search, but if you combine that with other operators in the same SELECT it can be much slower than Elasticsearch since in many of those cases Postgres needs to fall back to a full table scan.

HN discussionIf you only need modest search functionality and you don't want to manage another service/system, Postgres full-text search may be for you. http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... I read this article about 6 years ago and after an afternoon I added full-text search to the app I worked on at the time. 6 years later, it's still the only search they use. This small tool already built into postgr…

HN discussionPostgreSQL Full-text search is good enough. Also recently in PG12 they did many perf optimizations (Table Partitioning, Indexing, Vacuum) which will help in this regard. http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... HN discussionOut of curiosity —- have you looked at using Postgresql’s full text search functionality to implement your search engine (e.g. [1])? If so, what do you get out of the combination of Postgres + Elasticsearch that you chose it over just the Postgres full text search? HN discussionWhat other examples are there of "single dependency stacks"? This article is really about the versatility and reliability of postgres. And I'm all in agreement. Reminiscent of: https://www.craigkerstiens.com/2017/04/30/why-postgres-five-... https://webapp.io/blog/postgres-is-the-answer/ http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... http://boringtechnology.club/ As much as HN could lead you astray w…

on “Ask HN: Books about full text search?”I probably wouldn't migrate a project, but I switched my default db to PostgreSQL after seeing the many ways MySQL can silently screw up data. Truncating strings, truncating numbers, allowing NULLs in a NOT NULL, etc. Much (all?) of this can be fixed with settings these days: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/constraint-invalid-d... PostgreSQL has a hard bias toward correctness. If you give it invalid data, it…

on “Anyone made the jump from MySQL to PostreSQL? It is worth it?”> Why would one use Algolia over Postgres's built in text search features? Ex: http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... . Postgres built-in search features are really for large document searching -- we've tried using it for indexing e.g. an array of tags for auto-complete and the search times were in the ~500ms+ range, as a matter of fact the non-indexed regex search was only slightly slower.…

on “Thoughts on Algolia vs. Solr and Elasticsearch”Why would one use Algolia over Postgres's built in text search features? Ex: http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... I already have Postgres search queries running on the order of 1-3ms for large queries, basically faster than Algolia, with seemingly the same feature sets. I don't understand the value proposition over something like Postgres, for sites that already have Postgres databases. (A…

on “Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2016)”Here the author. Glad and scare that this project reached the 1st page of HN. This project is at a very early stage but I had to release it at some stage. I wrote some explanation in the Readme [1] and in a blog post [2]. TL;DR: Pome aim to be very simple to deploy, opinionated and battery included tool to have a look at the health of your PG db. It's maybe not the case of anybody here but in my career, I have seen…

on “Pome – Postgres Metrics Dashboard Written in Go”Well... HN for one or Reddit, r/programming and r/webdev would probably be logical places to ask/discuss such things. As for web search, something like solr/elastic search or even just Postgres eg http://rachbelaid.com/postgres-full-text-search-is-good-enou... I used Postgres full text search (from Rails) and it was simple and easy to get going but never got beyond pilot stage so can't comment on longer term short c…
