What Hacker News says?
Makes sense, this is just my personal experience so it's always interesting to hear what others have seen. I recently learned about Mechanical Orchard[1], which seems to have the same thesis (better to update legacy custom software with a modern custom solution rather than migrate to a modern off-the-shelf solution). HN discussionThis sounds like what the company Mechanical Orchard offers: https://www.mechanical-orchard.com/ Their pitch is like, "we take your COBOL code, and all the real-world data you can give us. Then we model your COBOL program as a graph, where each node has inputs and outputs. Then we use AI to port each node, making sure that it has the same (input => output) mapping for all the test data you gave us."

HN discussionI feel like this article ends just as it's starting to get going ;-) In the COBOL modernization space, I want to highlight Mechanical Orchard[0]. Their analysis tools can trace the execution of individual jobs, and decompose a complex data flow graph into a series of nodes with inputs and outputs. Once they have that, each individual node can be translated into a modern language, with every individual (input => outp…

HN discussionWe're doing Mainframe modernizations/integrations with the cloud @Mechanical Orchard. It's been really fun to see and learn the entomology of how computing got to where it is today. As other folks have described programming on the mainframe is about learning COBOL + JCL. I would also add that you need to understand how to read/write binary files according to a defined schema (Copybook) and encoding (EBCDIC, COMP, CO…
