I wrote up some ideas on best practices for unsubscription recently, after trawling through my inbox to clear the clutter. http://softwareas.com/best-practices-for-mailing-list-unsubs... If you're doing one-click unsubscribe, a smart practice is showing a message with other ways to stay engaged, e.g. Twitter ... and providing a one-click undo (ie re-subscribe).

HN discussionAlthough a lot of pathnames match across US-UK, I don't think they've fully harmonised all the IDs or have any efficient way to tell which ones actually match. So apparently they're just playing safe by redirecting to homepage. I'm not surprised as even those geo-targeted "Continue shopping" messages are fairly recent. HN discussionAnd if you put the URL into a URL shortener, you can (ab)use it as cloud storage for your spreadsheet. I once did some checks and found at least one shortener could store a URL string of at least 65KB [1]. That was in 2009. Not sure where those shortener limits are all at today - I suspect the industry dynamics changed when Twitter introduced its built-in shortener. 1. https://softwareas.com/the-url-shortener-as-a-c…

HN discussionI looked at URL shortener limits some time ago and found these approximate limits by trial-and-error: * TinyURL 65,536 characters and probably more, but requests timed out; there isn’t an explicit limit apparently * Bit.ly 2000 characters. * Is.Gd 2000 characters. * Twurl.nl 255 characters. This was 2.5 years ago, not sure how much of these have changed (other than bit.ly, which the linked article confirms is 2048,…

HN discussionI found a while ago most shorteners seem to limit at 2000 characters too, like the de facto browser standard mentioned on SO. http://softwareas.com/the-url-shortener-as-a-cloud-database

HN discussionFirstly, I didn't think HN would allow ▶ in the title, so congrats on the "new Rickroll" effort. Hope it doesn't get banned tomorrow :). (Google in fact strips the fun characters from SERP titles.) [Edit - and it's already gone in the time it took to write this] I've been using this pattern on http://player.fm for some time now. I agree it's best to just "use the force" of the DOM and base the title symbol on the ac…

HN discussion>html + js doesn't have a standard way to be shared outside a website. Sure it does, just send an .html file. With the <script> and <style> tags and data: URIs to embed images, what more do you need? Hell, you can even distribute sound: http://softwareas.com/offline-sound-no-flash-no-file
