Why HN links it
HN readers link Michael McLoughlin's blog for its geohash assembly post, which commenters call a great read that explains the bit-interleaving approach, and for a post on exposed Go pprof debugging endpoints.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
There's a great blog written by someone who wrote a very efficient geohashing algorithm in go/assembly that may help a little bit with understanding it. https://mmcloughlin.com/posts/geohash-assembly The simplified TLDR is: 1. Convert lat and long to something that's represented by bits. 2. Interleave these bits such that lat and long bits alternate in the sequence. 3. Optionally, but seems to be the standard, encod…

HN discussionI recently ported the wonderful geohash computation approach of https://mmcloughlin.com/posts/geohash-assembly into an OCaml CGI conversion webservice. There are so many subtle gems in that article, a pleasure to read. The bit-fiddling reminded me of invsqrt.

HN discussionhttp://mmcloughlin.com/posts/your-pprof-is-showing - "Golang’s net/http/pprof package is incredibly powerful: it’s trivial to debug a running production server. In the process it’s equally easy to accidentally expose your debugging information to the world. In this post we use the zmap project to show this is a real problem in the wild, and explain preventative measures you can take."

HN discussionI had that with the geohash algorithm I implemented naively as binary search until I came across https://mmcloughlin.com/posts/geohash-assembly that ultimately doesn't even compute it but read it from the in-memory floating point representation.
