This is the Kaizen/Deming principle #8 of "Drive Out Fear". Here's a good in depth blog article about this as it's a difficult to explain topic that, especially for managers trained in the older methods of management, deserves a long form treatment: http://michelbaudin.com/2012/10/27/deming_8_of_14_drive_out_...

HN discussionWhere I work we have the same policy. However, with that come its own problems. For one, you introduce more variance and complexity this way. There's actually a lot to be said for having only one supplier. It's not for nothing that Deming advocated for this. See e.g. http://michelbaudin.com/2012/09/17/demings-point-4-of-14-end... supplier

on “$4k Renault compared to Tesla Model 3”Maybe. I think it wouldn't qualify for a few reasons. I'm sure others would be able to justify this as being a form of error proofing. 1. From Toyota Production System An Integrated Approach to Just-In-Time by Yasuhiro Monden, "A mistake-proofing system consists of a detecting instrument, a restricting tool, and a signaling device. The detecting instrument senses abnormalities or deviations in the workpiece or the p…

on “Poka Yoke”Here are a couple but just reading through them, I think they are lacking. I need to think more about why. I suspect it's about tactics vs. principles. For example the one talks about pre and post mortems. I have seen those done badly first hand where they do NOT create psychological safety. Anyways, check these out but do so with an inquisitive mind. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Psychological Safety fro…

on “Ingredients for creating disruptive research teams”To add to the other replies here. From my perspective and experience, the actual reality of manufacturing anything complex does not match up with the set of rules that has to constrain any given ERP platform to be a useful, data-based record. Allow too much freeform data, and start losing more and more analysis ability. Too strict, and you quickly crash against the fuzziness of reality. All the while requiring that…
