Jeff Geerling writes Midwestern Mac, LLC, a personal blog at midwesternmac.com about programming, systems and hardware. Since 2012, 10 different Hacker News readers have linked it 41 times, most often “Getting Gigabit Networking on a Raspberry Pi”. The last post was in 2020, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (6) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN commenters link Jeff Geerling's posts on Raspberry Pi power draw and brownouts, speeding up Vagrant shared folders with rsync instead of NFS, and a hosted Solr services page.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

HN discussionHere are a few benchmarks I ran against DO, Linode, and Hot Drupal (another provider I've used in the past): http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/2013-vps-be... I've been very happy with my testing on Digital Ocean; the servers are fast, they remain up as much as any other provider, and the interface/service is great, and is improving every month. The only sore spot is that two times I've had intermitten…

HN discussionApparently syncing file changes between the VM and host via rsync leads to a lot better performance than using NFS. Worth a shot at least: https://www.vagrantup.com/blog/feature-preview-vagrant-1-5-r... http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/nfs-rsync-a...

HN discussionIt is normal that you are experiencing brownouts if you assume 500 mA is available. If you power a RPi via micro USB, then the 500mA budget is shared between the RPi and all your peripherals. Your post doesn't say which RPi model you have, but a B+ or a gen2 B will draw anywhere from 230-420 mA idle, so your periphals only have 80-270 mA available. HN discussionKeep in mind the choice of using a raspberry Pi comes along with the compromises made in the design of the Pi. For this specific use case, be aware that both network and USB bandwidth are limited. This'd be great for a network backup drive, where something like Time Machine or cron/rsync are regularly-but-not-continuously writing to the drive, but it'd fall to it's knees pretty quickly if you use it to host a househ…

HN discussionIt's one-time right now (though there's an open ticket to make it bidirectional [1]), but you can use `vagrant rsync-auto` to watch for changes and continously sync. I posted an article a few weeks ago highlighting one of the reasons I use rsync rather than NFS shares with Vagrant [2]. Though I would love to see FUSE+rsync (like this article mentions) as a default/standard option in Vagrant! [1] https://github.com/m…

HN discussion...but also much faster than normal/native shared folders: http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/vagrant-vmw... NFS can be useful in many scenarios, but using native FS (or using rsync to sync instead of mount a shared folder) is always going to win that battle.

HN discussionI have been benchmarking different usage scenarios for sharing files between hosts and VMs for the past couple years, and for the majority of use cases, the only way to get near-native performance without much hassle is to use Vagrant's rsync support instead of native shared folders or even NFS, which exhibits some jitter making it annoying at times.
