Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for older tech and publishing debates, such as Steve Jobs's 1997 comments on starting from the customer experience and a 1922 essay on being accommodating. Its posts are cited as references, not judged.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  1. For those who are confused about what plagiarism looks like, here's an example from 1918: Plagiarism In 1918 http://mikecanex.wordpress.com/2012/05/06/plagiarism-in-1918... Looks awfully similar to Plagiarism in 2012.

  3. The blog header is Diogenes, the Cynic (by an unkonwn artist) [1]. This suggests a possible misunderstanding of historical personalities. I believe Τimon, the Misanthrope, is the role model the author was really looking for: According to Lucian, Timon was the wealthy son of Echecratides who lavished his money on flattering friends. When his funds ran out, the friends deserted him and Timon was reduced to working in…

  9. "Vig" was famously used by Nathan Myhrvold in an internal memo to Bill Gates in which he proposed a structure whereby Microsoft could obtain a portion of content transactions that occur on the Internet. He used the term "vig" and it's appropriate here. http://mikecanex.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/the-day-apple-beca...

  15. I've read his blog posts on the subject. I've also read plenty of other posts that explain why his advice is terrible: self-publishing works for him because he already has a huge fan base, which he established while working through the traditional publishers. The following post, written by an outspoken proponent of e-books, deconstructs Konrath pretty thoroughly: http://mikecanex.wordpress.com/2010/12/29/joe-konrath…

  17. eBooks are my area. 1) Piracy is going to happen no matter what, so stop losing sleep over it. Count on the fact people will pay for books and concentrate on selling them. 2) Every eBook DRM has been cracked. But most who do that do so in order to be able to format shift. Get an eBook at $9.99 from Kindle Store vs $$ more from Sony or Kobo, then strip DRM and use Calibre to reformat to ePub for a Sony Reader or Nook…

  25. >>>The real argument for the agency model is that the publishers own the rights to publishing and can set terms as they wish. You lack knowledge of publishing. This model was struck down by the courts in the 1970s. Had it still been in effect, there would have never been a videocassette rental market -- which some studios, notably Warners, tried to subvert by tiered pricing for cassettes that were deemed "Rental Onl…
