What Hacker News says?

  1. Doubtful; I don't think comparing such small W/L distributions will be illustrative. On the other hand, the Nature paper shows the single 8 GPU machine performs similar to the 64 GPU cluster, but the larger clusters perform a comfortable margin better. [0] By a single machine winning many games relative to the distributed version, really it's just saying that the value/policy network is more important than the monte…

  3. http://www.milesbrundage.com/blog-posts/alphago-and-ai-progr... The best Go program before AlphaGo was CrazyStone, ranked at 5-dan ("high amateur" range).

  5. > What they've proved is that the same kind of intelligence required to play Go can be implemented with computer hardware. Before now, software couldn't beat a ranked human player at Go no matter how much computing power we threw at it . I don't think that's quite true as a description of what we knew about computer Go previously, though it depends on what precisely you mean. Recent systems (meaning the past 10 year…

The best discussion in terms of hardware adjusted algorithmic process I've seen is by Miles Brundage[1]. The additional hardware was the difference between amateur and pro level skills. It's also important to note that the non-distributed AlphaGo still had quite considerable compute power. Now was a sweet spot in time. This algorithm ten years ago would likely have been pathetic and in ten years time will likely sup…

  9. Preface: AlphaGo is an amazing achievement and does show an interesting advancement in the field. Yet ... it really doesn't mean almost anything that people are predicting it to mean. Slashdot went so far as to say that "We know now that we don't need any big new breakthroughs to get to true AI". The field of ML/AI is in a fight where people want more science fiction than scientific reality. Science fiction is sexy,…

I think this is a great (and very overlooked) in depth assessment of the significance of this advance http://www.milesbrundage.com/blog-posts/alphago-and-ai-progr... I do feel that given all the hype and speculation about strong AI researchers in Deep Learning should really come forward to contextualize the real impact of this - which I think is not all that great.
