HN discussionAnother option is to use a body that offers stabilization. Olympus has gotten their stabilization good enough that you can shoot handheld at pretty slow shutter speeds: https://blog.mingthein.com/2016/11/02/review-olympus-e-m1-ma...

HN discussionHere's one photographer using cheap point-and-shoot that comes quickly to mind: is Magnum photographer Alex Majoli good enough for you? He preferred to work with an Olympus C5050 point-and-shoot, which was cheap back then and you can pick up for $50 or less on ebay right now: http://www.robgalbraith.com/multi_page8c1c.html?cid=7-6468-7... HN discussion"Your iPhone is more powerful than the evidence-collecting computers in the cockpit." My iPhone 5s is arguably "more powerful" than the Hasselblad 501cm[1] I currently have sitting next to me. The iPhone has a built-in light meter, flash, and GPS. It can take more than 12 photos without reloading. But, the Hasselblad was designed to satisfy a different set of criteria than the iPhone. And, for those criteria, it's a…

HN discussionFor anyone looking for the 80/20 alternative here (80% of the experience/results for 20% of the cost), take a look at the Ricoh GR. It doesn't have a viewfinder, but the ergonomics are superb. APS-C sensor, fixed 28mm lens (a very sharp one at that), and 16mp. Goes with me on every trip. on “The Leica Q: A six month field test”Whilst it can be somewhat subjective, and different styles of photography will benefit different amounts from exotic gear, it's surprisingly complex even in fairly narrow domains. You're probably right that the first image wouldn't be significantly different on any other lens: it looks to be shot with a fairly narrow aperture in fairly unchallenging lighting conditions, so you're not hitting any of the aspects of ph…

on “Photo School”On the subject of medium format, there are rumors that Fuji may be about to announce a medium format mirrorless camera in the next few months[1]. This wouldn't surprise me at all - Fuji have experience with various sizes of medium format going back 40+ years[2], they have manufactured medium format cameras for other brands (including Hasselblad[3]), and recently discontinued their last remaining medium format film c…
