What Hacker News says?
What's your definition of "native" though? Sciter interprets "scripts", Electron interprets JavaScript, it'd say both will produce (to varying degrees) interpreted applications. Either of them can run code written in other languages, again with varying degrees of ease, e.g. https://keminglabs.com/blog/building-a-fast-electron-app-wit... Last time I checked Evernote, mentioned in the page you linked, renders notes un…

HN discussionFinda’s architecture[0] is great for this discussion. On the one hand, you can say “look, an Electron app that’s actually fast!” On the other hand, you can say “wow web apps are slow; it takes ~50x longer to render a basic list than to regex search across tens of thousands of strings”. From a performance perspective, the JS part of the stack certainly isn’t helping. 0: https://keminglabs.com/blog/building-a-fast-ele…

HN discussionI gave this talk. Slides are here: https://keminglabs.com/talks/#bangbangcon2015 I'll post some photos of the current version and more details on my twitter (@lynaghk) tomorrow (in 10 hours). Software is all on an 8-bit Atmel microcontroller, written in C in the style of Harel Statecharts ( http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/seoc/2005_2006/reso... ).

HN discussionI could have sworn there was a ClojureScript wrapper for D3 that was also called C3. Taking a quick search shows that it is actually called C2[1], from Keming Labs. [1]: http://keminglabs.com/c2/

HN discussionFinda < https://keminglabs.com/finda/ > is the best file search I've seen for macOS. (Incidentally, it has an Electron UI.) Doesn't seem to be updated for Tahoe yet, and even the Sequoia version isn't notarized, so it's not really clear if it has a future.

HN discussionThis reminds me of this writeup on doing something similar, with Rust as the native core for an electron app; the Rust in this case is in-process, written using "neon". This app (Finda) hit a performance target of 16ms rerenders for incremental browser history + desktop file search - computers are fast, even if you use Electron. - https://keminglabs.com/blog/building-a-fast-electron-app-wit... - https://github.com/n…

HN discussionAdam Bard's recent work is a good example: http://adambard.com As is Kevin Lynagh's http://keminglabs.com - He also made Denizen (I think) https://getdenizen.com/ I have no idea if any of these are profitable, but at least you get some ideas. Searching "site:news.ycombinator.com microbusiness" also brings up some good examples, for instance: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7367243

HN discussionI'm not a Javascript expert and I don't know D3 so I may be missing something here. I'm trying to add a d3 matcher for http://underthesite.com/ , referenced in a contemporary thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2746864 Here's the matcher: http://underthesite.com/technologies/d3/matchers/161 It fails to detect that http://keminglabs.com/ukuni/ uses d3. What's missing from the matcher? I notice that there's no…

HN discussionI run a small information visualization shop and we use Protovis & D3 exclusively for visualizations on the web. Bostock's work is the most useful and thoughtful visualization framework on any platform, and at this point the only reason I use Hadley Wickam's ggplot2 is for graphics that need more marks than Chrome can handle on the DOM. Initially I didn't see what D3 offered over Protovis, but I've since come around…
