Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for a benchmark of OpenSSL encryption speed with and without AES-NI, and for a post arguing systemd timers are easier to debug than cron.

What Hacker News says?

  1. In modern processors the bottleneck generally is the IO. While it is not the same think (desktop vs phone processors), this author benchmarks OpenSSL in an algorithm similar that Android uses, with and without AES-NI (Intel HW encryption): https://mjanja.ch/2013/11/disabling-aes-ni-on-linux-openssl/ . Even without AES-NI, this processor is doing more than 100MB/s of encryption. Mobile storage is a lot worse than thi…

  2. Hmm, it looks like the Caddy web server got $50,000 at one point (in 2016 apparently). They were the ones who recently decided (in mid 2017) that it was a good idea to add HTTP headers advertising the names of their sponsors to their open source version. Then, when someone forked their project, they filed a GitHub issue one hour later accusing the fork of trademark infringement! See the discussion here: https://news…

  3. I spent a bit of time trying to understand ffmpeg last year (seems like you need to re-learn the codecs and best practices every few years!) and wrote some notes down on a blog post. Hope it helps someone other than me! https://mjanja.ch/2016/07/video-encoding-for-the-web-in-2016...

  4. Sure! Look at any StackOverflow post where 'how do I run X as a service on Linux' is now 'make a .service file' rather than a combination of bash, pm2, forever, etc. Compare the upvotes on the .service answers to the alternatives. Also earlier today I wanted to find out about systemd timers and the first post was this, which thinks they're way better to debug than cron: https://mjanja.ch/2015/06/replacing-cron-jobs-…
