Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for its posts on Frege, a Haskell-like language for the JVM, including the 2013 'Frege: Hello Java' write-up on calling Java from Frege. Comments cite or link these posts without judging the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I dabbled with it about six months ago. I write most of my software in Scala, but I continue to hit the ceiling and run into places where type inference fails, compiler bugs add friction, or other oddities (22-tuple limit) get in the way. One of my experiments was to see if I could write some portions of my software in Frege, and some in Scala to get the best of both worlds. I think the answer that to that question…

  3. Calling Java from frege isn't hard, but there isn't currently a way to directly implement interfaces or inherit abstract classes in just frege. You can create a sort of proxy in Java (or whatever) and implement methods in frege, but it's not pretty. (I think; I haven't quite comprehended the examples.) The article at https://mmhelloworld.github.io/blog/2013/07/10/frege-hello-j... talks about this, but doesn't quite…

  6. http://mmhelloworld.github.io/blog/2013/07/10/frege-hello-ja... Am I correct in thinking that Frege cannot leverage on third-party java libraries? Clojure, another functional language built on JVM, has great support for this (possibly) missing feature.
