This is such a great quote, and helps explain what is a good abstraction. Because CRDTs have been in the zeitgeist a lot lately, I want to pick them as an example of a "good" abstraction. CRDTs have mathematical properties which can be described and understood independently of a specific implementation. And importantly, you can judge whether an implementation is correct with reference to these abstract rules. This m…

  3. There isn’t a monolithic “CRDT” in the way you’re describing. CRDTs are, broadly, a kind of data structure that allows clients to eventually agree on a final state without coordination. An integer `max` function is a simple example of a CRDT. The behavior the article found is peculiar to the particular CRDT algorithms they looked at. But they’re probably right that it’s impossible for all conflicting edits to “just…

  5. Moment is distinctive because (1) it's natively programmable, and (2) has a native, high-performance, live collaborative editing. For (1), programmability is why our templates[1] are generally so rich. See, e.g , our NES emulator[2] or our SQLite Explorer[3], both of which would be vastly harder to accomplish in Notion. It's even much harder in Obsidian, which is Markdown-first! Both templates took ~30 minutes of wo…

  9. It appears Moment is producing "high-performance, collaborative, truly-offline-capable, fully-programmable document editor" - https://www.moment.dev/blog There seems to be a conflict of interest with describing Yjs's performance, which basically does the same thing along with Automerge.

  11. Hey folks! Handle with Care is a software collective that builds and maintains open source rich text editing libraries, including React ProseMirror [1]. We all came from The New York Times’ content management system team, and we spend a lot of time thinking about rich text and collaborative editing. Now we’re working on something new: Pitter Patter will be a fully featured collaborative rich text editing toolkit, wi…
