Why HN links it

Linked mostly to promote the Monarch Money budgeting app, which commenters like for its UI, lack of ads and reliable syncing as a Mint replacement. One Mint-shutdown blog post is cited as useful insight.

  3. Co-founder of a (yet to be launched) Mint competitor here [1]. One pattern I think we all see over and over again is when products get bought by a large company, they often lose their "soul" (and the original team). Both those things happened with Mint. Another important pattern I've seen is that products, in the long-term, morph to take the form of their revenue model. Many personal finance products are free, but m…

  5. I can’t recommend Monarch strongly enough. It is a service that aggregates across bank accounts, brokerage, credit cards, etc. The killer feature for me is that it provides overall money in/money out, with some good visualizations too. This is nontrivial for anyone using multiple credit cards or bank accounts, and is *critical* information for being a responsible adult IMO. It also has budgeting, investment tracking…

  10. I'm building an app to do this, will let you know when it's in beta. :) Meanwhile, some of the similar apps that store data locally I've come across are: - https://copilot.money/ (nice UI; partly local—think it might use CloudKit for syncing) - https://ufincs.com/ - https://actualbudget.org/ I feel like http://monarchmoney.com is still the best UI I've come across, but I can't believe how common it is for all these…

  11. This might be just what you're looking for: https://www.monarchmoney.com/ Although I'm not sure how it compares to YNAB since I've heard good things about it too. What I like about Monarch is the nice UI, no ads, responsiveness and that the sync doesn't fail (often) like it failed (often) with Mint all the time.

  13. I've been using Monarch for the last 6 months when I heard Mint was shutting down. It's been a dream to use and I feel good paying directly for software that I believe they will continue investing in. It even supported more bank/credit connections than Mint was able to. I referred my sister last week and I got a discount. So I am going to throw this out there in case anyone wants to try it: https://www.monarchmoney.…

  16. I personally enjoy Monarch. Nice looking UI, full financial picture like Personal Capital but they use multiple data aggregators to sync your data and most institutions you sync they allow you to choose which aggregator you want to use. 20. It's always sad to see products that were truly innovative when they came out end up getting neglected and sunset due to large co M&A-based strategic decision-making. I had written a HackerNews front-pager a couple years ago about why Revenue Model is More Important Than Culture [0], and my co…

  23. I used to use YNAB which was very helpful in learning and getting comfortable with budgets. I now use monarch money[0] which has a much broader focus and offers better investment tracking, forecasting etc. They have a cash flow view which is particularly insightful. 24. I use Monarch. I pay a monthly fee for it, but it has zero ads, tracks all the accounts I care about, and gives me a simple interface for the "envelope method" on web and mobile. I've used Mint, YNAB, and several other tools. This is my favorite that I've found so far. Link: https://www.monarchmoney.com/ Referral link: https://www.monarchmoney.com/referral/chszg37bgv
